The stock wheel on my '67 is too big around and too deep for me. I would like something smaller (say 14" or so) and flatter. That moves the wheel away from me so I'm not driving with the wheel about an inch and a half from my chest. (OK, so thats a slight exageration...)

I saw a '79 'vette wheel that looks smaller and flatter. Is there any sort of adapter that would allow this combination?

Try a Camaro or Trans Am wheel.... Direct bolt on.

I would bet that the vette wheel is a bolt on....I know the earlier ones are...knowing GM I doubt they changed them

It's hard to find a good used '79 Vette wheel. They covered them with leather and used real crappy glue. Over the years, the glue got loose and sticky and stretched the leather out. I have seen this on almost every 78-79 Vette I've seen. The leather looks baggy and the glue feels squishy. There were very few early model GM cars that came stock with a wheel that was 14" in diameter. A good option is a Camaro wheel from a '68 or '69. They look real nice and will bolt right onto your column. It is a three spoke design (brushed stainless steel spokes) and they have a nice feel to them. They are available in grained vinyl or wood like mahogany or walnut. Try some of the Camaro parts suppliers. Like Year one, D&S there are tons if you do a search on the net. Prices range between $200.. to $300.00

Actually the one I found is wood. Has a 6 bolt pattern around the hub. Is that pretty standard for later year steering wheels, and will some "standard" adaptor work?

...and the '68 Camaro 3 spoke wheel is my second choice, but hundreds is a bit pricey for me right now. Have to find a good one cheap. Isn't that what we're always lookin' for on our parts/accessories?

i looked at a really nice impala wheel and went and found a column for what looked like a truck column and tried to put it on but the threads were different.

You don't need an adaptor, you just have to get a puller and pull the whole wheel off. then you can put pretty much any GM wheel back on. The shaft diameter and spline count are the same on all GM wheels.

Make sure you keep your nut, cuz they may be different.

80 something gm burb/pickup is direct bolt on. Feels right.

I got the wheel like 383's and like the looks of it. Summit's got a nice wood grain for 89.95 thats sharp.
