Timing Chain Gear Drive? What is the advantage?
Has any one used one? What do they do besides make noise?

for a high horsepower engine, a gear drive would be acceptable because it would make cam timing more stable than a chain or belt drive. however, on a common street engine, which is what i'm going to assume you're inquiring for, its not worth it. they eat up more power, as well as that ever so annoying whine. believe me, you think it sounds cool now, try driving one for anything longer than 30 minutes, you'll hate it.

Thanks Jeremy. That answered some questions I had about them. I am planing on @350-400hp and that is most likely not considerd HIGH enough horsepower to need one. I was wondering about the noise. I quess it would get pretty anoying.

i used to have one on a 327 el camino.. I liked it and it was pretty loud but if you have a loud exhaust, it mixes in pretty well and isnt overwhelming.. the benefit is exact timing and extreme reliability.. the pete jackson "quiet" drive is probably easy to live with.. Id definately get the quieter one if you plan on a lot of driving.. I dont recommend against them, but Id put the $$ into heads, headers, intake, ignition, etc first.. If you're going all out, sure why not.

I had a gear drive in my daily driver Blazer engine I just removed. The engine I'm putting back in has a chain drive. Does that tell you anything? Brian |

Well, in the Nova with a tunnel ram, 3in. 40 series flowmasters, and 4:56 gears it really sings. And I like it, but I don't think I would want one in a stock everyday driver. I put it in for timming benfits.

my neighbor had a gear drive on his camaro (race only) it was cool, it sounded like a blower whine. But (race only) they are annoying after awhile.

The worst thing about gears is the Torrington roller bearing behind the upper gear.
It has been known to self-destruct and take the oil pump with it. |

had a PJ "quiet" one in my small block...it was actually pretty quiet.

I run gear drives in 2 engines. They offer a much stabler tiing but they do pass on a lot more vibration and harmonics in the valve train.
A superior system would be the jesel belt drive, reliable, accurate and silk smooth. |

I got the pete jackson noisey gear drive in both my trucks. When I turn up the stereo I dont hear them at all. Yes.... both my trucks are driven daily.

ive never & never would use one even for racing. my 61 Bel Air 409 ran 11.70s with a roller chain, my buddys 81 Camaro tube chassis car runs low 9s in super pro. timing chain. I dont like noises in my engine that shouldnt be there. John

I like my gear drive on my 383. You can only hear it at idle or moving slowly, the exaust overwhelms it otherwise. If the gear drive isen't a precise meshing of the gears then you'll have more slop then a timing chain. HP is not a factor for these things. I like it, but most people don't. I wouldn't get another one either.

Tom, as long as YOU like it, is all that matters. I do things to my truck for ME. Ive had people tell me they dont care for my Vette tail pipe tips out the back, woulda looked better out the side.
There free to put theres out the side of there truck if they like.
