1971 cheyenne

I’m looking at buying a 71 Cheyenne. After all of my wheeling and dealing I want one that I can keep and drive. I found this one, it’s a factory 402 with steering, air and brakes, as well as bucket seats. Overall very minimal rust. Runs and drives, have heard it run, pretty solid pickup. Asking price is 5500 but he is about 18 hours from me so I’d either go get it just because it’s be a fun road trip or ship it. But just seeing if my impulses are getting the best of me on it or if it’s worth paying somewhere in the 5-5500 range. Any help is apprecaited. You guys are the experts. Thanks

Re: 1971 cheyenne

Well based on a very quick peak at that truck, it is a $5K truck all day long in my opinion....I wouldn't hesitate too much on it.
Big Block, a/c, toolbox (?), bucket seats (still there?), orange and white Cheyenne....with some rust.

The biggest 'hit' against the truck is just the tired paint and a very poor choice of wheels.
If that had better tires on it and factory hubcaps as well as a heavy duty cut wax and shine...it would be advertised as a $7500 (or more) truck all day long.
I'd go get it....and I would take a trailer with me to bring/haul it back.
OR...if you decide to drive it back, fair enough....just have a couple of very good contingency plans in place along your route in case you have trouble.

Looks like a good find....keep us posted!

I wouldn’t drive it back..I’d hook into the trailer and go get her. Seats are still there but has a later 80s style console in it.

Re: 1971 cheyenne

no expert here, but sure looks solid $5k truck to me..

good options on the spid, console isn't terrible to replace..

rust looks repairable but usable body as is..

I like the color, bbc, a/c, buckets.. those alone are $$

how you make the deal all depends on your resources..

have you asked a board member to scope it out for you?

might save you a long drive if there's an undisclosed deal breaker..

good luck and please keep us posted!

I don’t know of any members in that area and I wouldn’t want to be a pain in the ass to someone up there..I might be able to get a family friend to transport it home.

Re: 1971 cheyenne

If I was looking at that truck. I would buy it , then haul a trailer up there and retrieve it.
It may run but how reliable and road worthy is it , especially without first looking at it.
Haul it home is my vote.

Re: 1971 cheyenne

most folks around here would be happy to look at it for you if it's close to them..

I had a couple of offers to help me and turned out to be a trusted member seller, didn't need it..

I've offered the same assistance in the past as well..

seems like a list of volunteers by location would be handy if forum admin would post it..

figuring it out manually takes some doing or advertise for it..

like karma, what comes around, goes around.. lots of generous folks here..

at 18hrs away, might be worth investigating to eliminate
undisclosed deal breakers..

or maybe the risk isn't that great for you and just go for it..

good luck either way, hope it's what you're looking for and you get it home safely!

Re: 1971 cheyenne

I second the idea of a volunteer list ! Is there one already ? Decent price if it runs and drives. 5k all day long in mid atlantic area.

Still working out some shipping details, have heard a few videos of it start up and run. You guys have been more than helpsful on this deal. Also wanted to check with you guys on whether or not these seats are originals or not. I’ll put a picture on and might also put up a thread on whtether or not someone in the area can look it over possibly. Thanks

71 Cheyenne? Looks like the SPId says Custom Sport Truck? Maybe I read the SPID wrong

I may need to be corrected but I believe some or if not most say custom sports truck depending on what factory it came from? I have another 71 Cheyenne that also says custom sport truck on the spid

Re: 1971 cheyenne

I'll make a motion that we ask the admins to start a volunteer list, perhaps by state? Count me in and put me down for the Fort Worth, TX. area.

I say scoop that baby up!

Re: 1971 cheyenne

If the underside rust is as good as the floorboards I wouldn't have a problem with the 5 k price for a driver. I'm a fan of the Buick rallys on it, they are something you just don't see often.
Just going by the seat adjuster handle I would say the tracks are stock even if the rest isn't. As the seller for a picture of the underside of the seat.

Yup, RPO Z84 is a Cheyenne or "Custom Sports Truck" at some assembly plants.

Re: 1971 cheyenne

I'm only interested in being helpful to you, don't want to sound like a Beavis...

All those rusty spots are much larger on the opposite of the sheet metal. They would need to be cleaned up and painted on both sides of the sheet metal ASAP to help prevent those areas from rusting any more.

I'm pretty conservative with $$$ $5500.00 does not buy much these days, so even in it's condition that we've all seen from your pic's I thinks its a fair deal.

Being a big block makes it better to me, not that many made. A board member here argued that point here....

I'd get it all cleaned up, that tired paint looks good enough to take a buff job and look nice (or nice enough).

Definitely trailer it, BUT you really need to be there to inspect it first hand.

I see it's got a Holley spread bore carb on it. I wonder if it's a 650 or 800 cfm?

Re: 1971 cheyenne

ok.....5 years ago I bought a very similar truck for the same money, orange white, some rust, wood bed deteriated, 402 air and highlander. Ihave spent $$ (2k for rocker and cab replacement), $1k for wood bed replacement. 5k for engine rebuild. I "enjoy" working on it as I drive it. If that is what u want then I think it is a good deal. Some say too much money, but, they are from areas that have lots of trucks with not so much rust. I think that is a fair priced truck with good options. air, bbc and buckets-not a lot of them around.

Re: 1971 cheyenne

My suggestion, for 5000 go get it. As you stated you want a keeper and if this one after you buy it turns out its not the one you want to keep, then sell it as it sounds like you have bought and sold a few.

Re: 1971 cheyenne

I think I have it bought for 5,000. Still ironing out the shipping or me going to get it. I have someone coming to pickup a truck from me sometime that said he would probably be able to run up there and get it and look at it for me but wouldn’t mind another set of eye for sure eyes if anyone is around there.

not to be a richard, but where the heck is this truck?

maybe a location, even a broad area like what state it's in or major city nearby would help..

update your op title and it may draw some attention from a member near the truck more than happy to check it out..

eg; 1971 cheyenne recon request in timbuktu please

good luck!

I'm thinking he thinks he may get scooped if he goes public with location info. You are right though a general area would be helpful in getting some help.

Yep, those look like original buckets and console(score) although maybe recovered?
Location-wise well I know its not in Florida, here it would be about 18K
Hope you get it soon, probably wont last long.
