Steering box ID
I was checking the steering on my 62 c10 before I get it back on the ground and I noticed the steering box was held on by only 2 bolts with 1/2" spacers. I would like to put the correct box back in and I'm pretty sure this one is not it. 2 1/2 turns lock to lock. Which steering box should I look for?

Re: Steering box ID
That looks to be a typical '68-'87 C series steering box. Some spacers are needed but whoever installed the box obviously did not know how to install it correctly if they used only 2 bolts. My steering box adapter plates use all 4 bolts.

Re: Steering box ID
64 to 66’ have three holes for attachment of gear box to the frame with out spacers. Not sure about 60 to 63, would think they are the same.
On the correct steering gear box for your truck, 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton use the same unit. Note:The pitman arm is different on trucks with power steering assist. Will try to get photos for you of gear box with identifying characteristics, and pitman arm difference between manual and power assist. The Captains adapter is great for adding power steering. Les |

Re: Steering box ID
Thank you for the information. I look forward to seeing the pictures for reference when you get e chance. I was not sure if that box could be mounted correctly but it sounds like captains bracket should correct that problem.

Re: Steering box ID
Photos of gear box with power assist pitman arm. The power assist pitman arm is curved. Note: manual steering uses a different pitman arm.
Will try to post photo of manual pitman arm, need to get over to storage. Les Last edited by aotte1; 10-15-2018 at 11:13 PM. |
