Have you ever seen a broken spring?

I was tearing down the front end of my 87 tonight to replace the bushings, ball joints and steering joints in the front suspension. Much to my surprise, when I lowered the jack and dropped the lower arm on the right side, the bottom coil of the spring was broken off. I'll get pics tomorrow, I didn't expect to need a camera tonight....

Has anyone ever heard of this or seen it before?

I have only ever seen it on a spring that was heated for lowering similiar to the ones I pulled out of my 83. They broke when we threw them in the trash bin.
