WTB: 1/2 ton rear end for 94 chev 4WD-Washington

Just had my rear end go out in my 94 chev z-71. Need gear ratio to be 3.73 Any input would be greatly appreciated. Just bought the truck 4 months ago so I am bummed! Thanks!

Apparently this is a very common problem. Mine went out in the '93 a couple years ago. The yards around here wanted $1000 for used and I think $1295 for new, I about choked. After himming and hawing for a while, I bought all the parts and rebuilt it myself. It was my first time, but that was 50,000 miles ago so it worked. I spent about $600 on parts as I needed to replace the carrier too (spun bearing). I think I got a dial indicator out of that $600. Call Randy's ring and pinion. Good luck!


I'm trying to remember.....I had to use a dental pick to unscrew the broken bolt that holds the spider gear shaft in. And needed a BIG and I mean BIG impact gun to tighten the crush sleeve for the pinion gear. Dan


Also, I just remembered that mine might have been more expensive at the yards because its a suburban and they all have the mounts for the rear sway bar.

What's the spacing from center bolt to center bolt. Curious if one of my 12 bolts will work. Those 10 bolts are notorious for this

I will check on that as my truck isn't here right now. I am new to this rear end diff thing, so I am not sure how that works. I just don't want to have to spend an arm and a leg, and I want to do it right. Thanks!

I personally wouldn't rebuild the 10 bolt depending on how bad it is. My 12 bolt came out of a 78 and I'm not sure if the springs were the same width on the frame. Not a biggy as they can be moved but you probably want the cheapest and easiest swap.
