I know, I know... there's a search button, but it pulls up soooo much. its easy to get lost.

Goals this month: brake lines, gas tank.

I ordered my brake lines and I was going to start ordering all the stuff I need for the stock tank but I'm a little over 100 bucks if I get all the stuff I want and thought maybe this 100 bucks could go towards a rear tank instead. Both the Camaro and Mustang tanks are pretty cheap and it wouldn't cost much to fab a cradle.

Did you use a mustang tank or a Camaro or something else that fit great...

Can you show a pic of the fitment?

How much modification was done to make it fit? I've seen where the rear cross member was moved on some, does this affect the rear springs?

My carbureted engine currently has a mechanical fuel pump. Keep mechanical fuel pump or go electric?

I've also decided to have the filler in the bed if I go this route. I wont be hauling stuff very often.

It takes forever to find a good picture of a mustang tank in a stock AD frame in the builds and projects.

This is the best pic I've found. This is a mustang tank right? I've read all over where they fit good but I wanted to see a good picture. Can I still run with my mechanical pump just fine? This mounts straight to a cradle? No rubber or anything? Is the tank grounded?

Found this... dwcr's build. This tank and miraclepieco's tank, are they different from a factory camaro tank? I thought the filler neck was longer on these. Could a longer one just be cut down to the desired size and a rubber filler clamped to it?


Im trying to get an idea of which hangs lower and which is easier to adapt. They both look pretty straight forward. Im going to use aftermarket gauges. Does that eliminate the mustang gauge issue?

The kit from Tanks Inc shows you can order the sender in 5 different ohms. I used a 1970 22 gallon mustang tank, mustang sender and an aero motive in tank fuel pump. I drilled for the pump where the tank is ridged, fortunately the fuel pump comes with a thick foam seal. For the sender I used the stock mustang 73-10 ohm. The gauges I ordered from nvu (new vintage USA) and had them set the fuel gauge to the ford sender.
For what It’s worth by buying the stock mustang tank and sender I only paid about $125.00for both.

What's your opinion on if I need an electric pump? Would it be to much for my carb? I guess my mechanical should work fine...


How much more does a 20 or 22 tank hang down compared to a 16?

My stock frame has the big hump cross member right at the rear spring shackle mount. If it is moved, does that area need to be reinforced? Or boxed? I will have a cross member in front and back of tank...

All the extra capacity is above the seam. In the 65 mustang 16 gal the top of the tank is flat.
No you don’t HAVE an electric fuel pump unless you’re running a high hp motor or EFI. I installed the aeromotive pump in case I decide to run EFI later it will be ready for that.

B-Mac's photos show one prime reason for using the Mustang tanks, mounting the is very simple to do and do right. The tank is designed to sit on a lip in the trunk of the Mustang and that works well with a frame work made for it to sit on. The Camaro tanks takes a bit more thinking and designing to mount. The thing with it is that the sender jives with GM gas gauges where you may have to do some changing using a Mustang tank.

Yea, it looks like it sits in real nice. I plan on using aftermarket gauges so I would like to think it wouldn't be an issue. Looks like I could get some square tubing and make a cradle real easy. Any suggestions on tubing thickness?

I'm wondering on where to mount it, in the frame, on the top flush, or an inch or two above the frame... I want to make sure my flush bed filler goes in easy.

One thing I didn't like about the stock-style Mustang tank is the pickup location on the lower front makes it more susceptible to leaking and won't accept most aftermarket pickups and senders. Tanks makes a Mustang clone that has the pickup and sender on top to utilize standard aftermarket hardware. Also the Camaro tank has 2 more gallons capacity than the 65-66 Mustang tank. The 67-up Mustang is higher capacity, but it protrudes above the mounting flanges by a couple of inches, if bed floor clearance is an issue for you as it was for me.

Well... for 90 bucks I ordered a mustang tank and sender. About the same cost as getting everything to put stock tank in.

I'll keep searching for more pictures. The rear crossmember was put right on the rear spring mounts I would think on purpose....

Got my tank in the mail! Any suggestions on what I should do for a cradle? I have several pieces of 3/16 angle iron I was thinking of using...

Look at how bmac and I have mounted ours, it can be accomplished with angle iron. I just happened to use 1x2 square tubing drilled and tapped holes to go through the flange of tank.

On my 1948 3100 I used a 1969 Mustang 20 gallon tank from Rock Auto. This is an LS conversion, I used Tanks,Inc in tank electric pump kit. I removed the cross member for holding the spare tire and installed a cross member (2X4 3/16 wall square tubing) welded on the end of the frame rails. I did not want the tank filler in the bed, so I had a local radiator shop plug the factory filler and install a new filler on drivers side top rear of the tank. I mounted my tank so it fits in from the bottom, I do not want to have to remove the bed to service the tank. I put the filler on the top rear fender on the drivers side. I do not like low hanging gas tanks, especially with square corners. On my install you can not see the tank with the bumper on.

Made a cradle out of the angle iron I had. Temporarily I also put a piece on the back when I cut out old crossmember. I'll remove it and beef up the cradle.

Are you using a Mustang gas tank sending unit? Will it sync with the chevy fuel gauge? Meaning, if the tank is at 1/4 tank, will this be reflected on the gauge?

No... you have to modify the sender or use a different gauge. I'm not sticking with stock gauges.

I'm leaving mine in the safest spot, behind the seat, but that's just me. What I don't understand is where do you put the spare tire? I'm not leaving my truck on the side of the road for lack of a spare. Lots of people out there with trailers driving by. I believe in some states you are required to have a spare.

I'm going with mine mounted on side of bed. It's part of the look I want, that and wood bed rails on top too.
