Rear diff

I have a 1972 Chevy c20 Cheyenne camper special with a
350
4 barrel Rochester carb
Turbo350 auto trans
3/4 ton axle
2 wheel drive
What is the stock diff type and gearing
I just blew mine up and want to still be able to do 100 and but be able to spin tires from a stop and am wondering what I should I get for hearing. I am considering a limited slip diff

Re: Rear diff

4.10 is standard equipment for your configuration, so if there is no mention of gearing on the SPID, that's what it was born with.

Doing 100 and also doing burnouts calls for different gearing if you're going to stick with your TH350. 4.10 is fine for burnouts, not for 100 unless the next thing you're hoping to blow up is your motor. What you really need is an overdrive trans to cover you at both ends. Unfortunately you're short one rear currently, so the price tag is gonna climb significantly.

But, having said all that, I gotta say one more thing - a C20 is a work truck, not a hot rod. If you're like me when I was what I'm guessing is your age, you'll blow out about one more rear end before your wallet hurts so much that you realize that it's not really "that" cool to be doing burnouts in a C20.. The 4.10 is really for pulling loads and doing work, not destroying itself with burnouts. And these trucks were never made to be doing 100 when they were new, let alone after 46 years. I'm just gonna assume you've checked the ball joints, tie rods, and the whole nine yards. If they're all in perfect shape and so are your tires... It's still not a 100 mph truck.

I know, old guy fun sponge, that's me. But we all learn eventually, trying to help you not have to do it the hard way. Or the expensive way. Welcome and good luck.

Re: Rear diff

The truck came with either the Eaton HO52 which has a dropout center like a 9" or the Dana 60. Most likely as a small block and as a Chevrolet, it was the Eaton. Both are super stout and unlikely to be broken by a plain jane 350.

But if you blew it up you were doing something off the charts stupid. Neutural drops? Giant one wheel burnouts? Rockford turnarounds?

Re: Rear diff

My '72 C20 Custom Camper came with a 350, TH400, Dana 60, and 4.10 gears. Going with 3.73 gears and 4L80E. Building a daily that'll run 75-80mph.

Mike you’re bringing back some memories that I’d rather not relive! Gotta love a 4000rpm neutral REVERSE drop INTO A Rockford turnaround! I was able to manage appropriately 7-8 before the bell housing spiral cracked like an accordion and shortly after that the ring and pinion gears snapped off like a crackheads teeth. Hey, at least it was on a 73ish police interceptor F—- LTD! Man that was stupid fun!

Re: Rear diff

Oh yea, the Rockford days. I wonder how many cars and trucks were tore up because of that show. Add mine to the list!
Of course back then we just thought seat belts were there to get in the way. My buddy ended up in my lap and my hands flew off the steering wheel. Of course we had to try it again!!!

Re: Rear diff

Doin the same with a c20 as peppertree garage, searchin for the right differential now.Have a 700r but havent sent it off yet as may go with 80.Lots to learn with rear gears.Dont need to go 100 in a old truck no more,40 years ago was enough.Only a five year old truck then.

The seat belts in my Chevelle were used as bottle openers.
