17" wheels like OEM

Hey working on a cummins build and wanting everything to look stock, except for maybe the lift and a few other items. However, because of my 6" lift I'd like to get 35" tires and though the 16" rims will work and I can attach the 3/4 ton hubcaps to them, I wish someone made a 17 or 18" rim that would still attach the 3/4 ton GMC hubcaps.

Does anyone know if someone does?

The only lead I have found is Wheel Vintiques but they only make a 16" rim.

Nope, no such thing has ever been made. Hubcaps became extinct, then came the silly infinite wheel dimensions explosion that blew out all convention. Wheels that accept hubcaps are the definition of convention.

So... my friend who bought my '72 K/20 Highlander, and is doing an extensive top shelf restoration, had 17 x 9s custom made because he is too young to appreciate convention . He wanted hubcentric wheels so he started with a set of OEM GM 16s, sent them to the wheel builder in CO, and they fitted them to 17 x 9 hoops. As you can imagine, this was no cheap way to go. He probably spent as much on shipping as I spent on a set of Wheel Vintiques 16 x 8s shipped free from Jegs.

I was kinda afraid of that. Do you happen to have a picture of the 17x9s your friend had made? I may go the custom route. Thanks!

here is my version of factory look with aftermarket .

pic 1 = 73-87 style wagon / sport wheel .
pic 2 and more = aftermarket D-window rims .
last pic = center cap open for dana 60 hub to pass threw .

then gm 88-00 drw rear deep caps with lug nut covers and aftermarket conversion lug nuts to do american thread and ext thread for nut caps to hold cover on . 2 covers pop the center emblem off and punch the center out for the hub to pop threw .

note : gm rim had 8 windows in the center on 5-6 lug . aftermarket 8 lug have 10 windows in the center . this helps give the factory look with the same +2 windows .

and for your build up with the cummins swap that 3/4 ton front is going to eat ball joints and stuff from the weight . dodge only used the dana 60 1ton front or did 2wd with these engines .

Thanks Sweet for the idea. That looks pretty cool! Thankfully I have swapped the front end to a Dana 60 with kingpins and a 14 bolt on the rear. Even got custom front leafs for the weight of the cummins. This is my first ever build so things are going with a lot of research first, then build a little . It’s time consuming but I want to try to do everything one time.

There was a 17 1/2" wheel option available that came on Dodges back in the late 50's and 60's but there are not a lot of tire options for off road tires (Lots of semi truck and trailer tires). Even rarer would be the 19" wheel that came on some Fords .

Honestly, I haven't even seen those 17 x 9s yet. I keep forgetting to ask him the name of the business that did it. The wheels look like wide GM wheels that are 17", 1/2" bigger diameter than what was seen on these trucks through the years. People ask if my 16s are 16.5s. They are all so close in size.

I did this with 16 x 10s on a '91 Suburban. I have considered buying 8", paint rallye wheel color, chrome 88-98 center caps, with trim rings on my '95 Suburban for a factory sport wheel look.

Yep. Nothing's cheap these days and custom costs more than that. But custom is cooool

I used some old 17” dodge rims I had bought cheap for the tires off CL years ago. Here they are with 37’s.

I went to smaller tires later, and added cheapie eBay trim rings. I’m thinking of trying out some factory late model center caps like those listed above. I put a set on some H2 hummer rims on a ‘97 3/4 ton years ago.

(I’m running 1.5” adapters due to the factory rims high offset)

'05 Dodge 2500 wheels with adapters due to high positive offset. I think they are 17x7.5 with 5 or 5.5 backspacing. Tires are 37x12.50x17 Pro Comps.

Here it is with the 37's on 17x8 alcoas with like a 0 offset and no spacers for referance.

I personally like it with the smaller 315/75's on steelies. I'm planning on keeping those and lowering back to stock. (Front is 2" higher and rear is 1")

I prefer those alcoa with any size tire. Lighter weight and balanced better than steel also

But Im not a old steel rim guy with the better quality aluminum rims now days.

Although,, Ill say I like the looks of a stock old steal wheel way better than most of the Hideous looking new style designs on the new aluminum rims now days
