We bought a 72 blazer about 3 months ago. The kid we bought it from said his sister had the title and he would get it to us when we picked it up. When we went to pick it up he said he couldn't find it and he was applying for a lost title. We bought the blazer for $1500, but only paid him $1000 and told him we would pay the rest when he gave us the title. We still haven't heard from him. We have a different 72 blazer that we parted out that still has the VIN# and title, so I guess we could switch VIN's, but I am kinda disappointed because this other blazer we bought had the glovebox sheet intact (and in great shape) with lots of options- AC Tilt ect!
Long story short I am just wondering if it is worth going after the other title for $500 or if I should just change VIN's?? We aren't restoring this blazer for show or anything. Here's a pic.

I would ask him if it was stolen. Put the fear in him a little.
If he swears it's not, and it's really just lost, then I would dangle $500 cash in front of his face, and tell him he has 60 days to get you the title if he wants the cash.
To me, I would go through the trouble of filing for a lost title for $500.
If you don't hear back from him for two months, switch the VIN #'s
Then at least you can feel like you tried.

Are you sure they owned the blazer...they might not even have the title.

I would try and get a title for it, here in good ole Michigan, if it hasn't been plated in a long time just go to your local dmv/secretary of state and apply for a lost title.

I believe if you tell them the title is lost they will search, and if there is no record of it being reported stolen they will issue you a new one.

I would get a title somehow, what if it is reported stolen, and then it is tracked to you, and they discover you replaced the vin?
That's just asking for trouble.

Agreed. The authorities probably won't bother to find the "mythical" person you "bought" it from: they'll just jail you for GTA.

Do it right. Get them to produce a title or a duplicate. Switching VINs is illegal isn't it? What if it were stolen and somebody recognizes the pic you posted?

You can apply for the lost title as well can't you. I did, but then again I am in texas. I bought a 69 Pontiac LeMans from this guy for 400 bucks. All it needed was some plugs and a battery.

He said the title was "lost" when actually the car was sort of stolen. He fixed the car for a friend/owner one time and the friend/owner didn't have the cash to pay for the repairs so he kept the car. That's were I came in. We applied for the title and all we had to do was contact the original owner and hope he didn't want his car back. Luckily he didn't and just wanted 50 bucks for his signature for the title. Hope this helps.

I would ask him if it is stolen like stated above, and try to get a title. But switching titles and vin plates would be easy enough. With all the people on this board and all the vin switching going on, I have never heard of someone getting in trouble for it. With thousands of members on here, someone would have gotten caught if anyone really checked up on that sort of thing.

Do you know anyone in Alabama? They don't need an old title to issue you a new title, just a bill of sale. There are also title companies that can do it all for you for a fee.

Wow - lots of opinions here eh? I just looked thru the paperwork we got with the blazer, and found a ticket he had gotten. I suppose if it was stolen the cops would have hauled him in. Also found a "one-time use permit" for driving the blazer. He seemed like a nice kid, not that nice kids can't steal...anyways I think I will go back to where he lives and ask him about the lost title. I think it is worth the $500. I just don't want to go apply for a lost title and find out it is stolen and loose the vehicle. Thanks for all the input.

Keep in mind that the VIN is on the frame also so if it is stolen it could still come back and bite you on the a$$. A guy I know had one of these trucks stolen....he found it at a used carlot...both the VIN tag and the glovebox door had been changed....Went to court and showed the judge he had the title to the VIN on the frame...He's driving the truck and the guy from the carlot is SOL

Does he have to get a "lost title"? In AZ, you can go down to the DMV, and get a 'duplicate title' for $6. They print it on the spot.

i agree totally if someone claims it and they find out the vin doesnt match the frame it would be rough going to prison for a truck you bought

it just seems fishy to me that someone would sell a truck that looks that good for 1000$

Meathead95- What actually happened is the guy was asking $1750 for the blazer. We went and looked at the blazer and offered the guy $1500 and then his buddy was trying to get rid of a 72 Suburban and we offered his buddy the remaining $250 and got both the blazer and the Burb! We traded the Burb to Frank (Pickmup) for about $800-- $900 in parts, so we made out great! If the kid would come up with the title for the blazer we told him we would give him the other $500 then. His friend with the Burb signed the title over to us right there. Guess we will be making a road trip to this kids house to be asking for a title. Thanks!

Diane, try this link. There are companies that can get you a title and it is perfectly legal. I know a few people that own wrecking yards and do this all the time. I'm pretty sure in Washington all you need to do is drag his butt into the nearest DMV and they can do the switch without actually holding the original title. The title is just paper proof. They have him in the computer so shouldn't be a problem. Make sure he's got his ID.

I sold my buddy a truck about 3 weeks ago in which I could not find the dang title. We went to the local DMV and within 5 minutes transferred it into his name. I also said I gifted it to him and he didn't have to pay any taxes on it either. Total cost was $24 bucks. Good luck.
