My new boat trailer is a 25 ft "Roadrunner" tandem axle. Boat and trailer together weigh about 5000 pounds, so I had them install hydraulic disc " surge brakes" on the rear axle. They work very well and there's no extra wiring or electric brake controller to mess with. They cost about 500 bucks installed. Roadrunner trailers in Lewisville did the work.

sounds awesome...but when the trailer only cost me about 700 bucks.....lol. can't justify puttin 500 dollar brakes on there. especially when i don't have 500 dollars to spend...lol. thanx tho. what brand of electric brakes are good?

Some places will put electric brakes on for around $200 per axle.

If you are mechanically inclined you could do it yourself. I've built a couple of trailers using components from Champion Trailer Supply . They have everything you need and can probably help get you the right parts.

Stay away from surge brakes they only work when your going forward down a hill. If your backing down a hill they will not work at all and you will have to depend on the vehicle brakes.

not ONLY when your going down a hill....
They will work anytime as long as the trailer pushes against the truck, just as when you hit the brakes. Just make sure you put the litle pin in so that they don't apply when your trying to back up.

I personally prefer electric brakes.
