85 C10 Silverado - 305 - Quadrajet

I just finished installing a reman carb and when I cranked her up she was smoking up a storm.
And barely running. I am assuming that this is a timing issue. Is there something else on the carb that I should check or adjust?

That’s a flooding issue.
Look in the carb when it’s running.
If you see any raw fuel you’ll need to pull the carb apart and check the needle/seat or floats.

THANKS for the info. I probably wont be pulling the carb apart I bought a reman carb, so I expect it to run correctly. I will be sending this back...But thanks again brother, you helped out enormously.

Best place I've found for rebuilt carbs is National Carburetors. They used to have a tech named Eddie Obie (not sure if he is still there but someone can help you.) Guy was awesome to work with. Give them ALL your vehicle/engine specs and they can custom build your carb. They do most carb rebuilds for the major automotive chains as well. Just my experience.

Choke open? One stuck shut will cause the cloud of black smoke and crap running.

Did it come with a filter installed? Doesn't take much crap to foul up the needle/seat and cause flooding. A generic rebuild place just might scrimp on the $2 cost of a filter.

Just getting tossed from truck to truck during shipping could get the needle and seat stuck. Might as well take your chances with another one. The rebuilder may not want you to take the top off for a look see anyway.

Correct. I am not touching the guts of the carb. I am just going to return for my money back.

Unfortunately I went through several reman quadrajets on my old Buick before finally giving up and having a reputable guy rebuild one from two or three parts Q-Jets I had. All with the same type of issue - flooding or completely plugged idle jets/valves. That was several years ago, before I learned how to rebuild them.

I had good luck with parts store 2bbl Rochesters, just not the 4bbl ones.
