Opinions please!
Guys,
I had a 2002 Chevrolet fully loaded LT Z71 Shortbed Ex. cab 4x4 that had a $500.00 a month + insurance payment that was as comfy driving as the living room couch...it's gone and so is the payment, Hurray!!! In it's place a bought a 72 AC SWB K-10 4x4 that is mechanically sound. I am in the doing the cosmetic restore/paint change while using it as my daily driver. I have come to the conclusion that to do the resto correct, which I intend on doing, I need another vehicle while I take the 72 apart for painting and frame powder coating. So.....another 67-72 truck needs to be purchased. I want a 2wd SWB to drive while I restore the 72' K-10. The front end of a 68' really is the look I am after for the 2wd. Question is : Is it more cost effective to buy a 68' and do the PDB, PS conversion or buy a 71' or 72' that already had PDB, PS and do the 68' front clip conversion. Thanks

I say it is easier to ger the 5 lug/disk brake stuff in good shape than it is to find sheet metal in good shape. Not to mention for suspention stuff, you can use parts from 71 - 78...so the numbers are in your favor to get a 67/68 truck and swap the suspention.
A complete brake job including some carbon fiber shoes may be all you need and be cheaper and quicker than a disk conversion...something to keep in mind. |

Well, either choice would still be cheaper than the $500.00 truck payment + insurance payment. I would go with the '71-'72 because they have the disks anyway, but depending on where you are located the prices for them could run more, but it is alot eaiser to switch the front clip than it is to add PS,PB,Disks.

That is a good point, it is easier to swap front clips...but then you have a 2 tone eyesore. A neighbor actually asked me when I was gonna to something about the green fenders on my ride. She actually looked offended when i said probably never.

My opinion only
If you get another 67-72 you won't be able to decide which one to work on!!! You will be back and forth all day unless you have amazing discipline!! I suggest pick up a 1993 or up S10 or S10 blazer. That way you get fairly descent gas mileage while working on your Other truck. You can haul parts and enines too. I just negotiated a deal to get my buddy his 1993 S10 Blazer with 4.6 vortech (very nice blazer) for 2500.00. And this is in California where anything that passes smog is worth 2000.00. This is Just My opinion though. Good luck whatever you decide!!

If going the s-10 route...stay as far away from the CPI injected ones as you can.

67 GMC 305 V-6 GOOD FENDERS AND CAB need rear end will throw in 69 swb leaf frame $400.Approxamately 150 miles north of WESTMINSTER CO. (sorry couldn't help it)

Thanks for your responces. I guess it's wiser to get the 71-72 and put the 68 clip on it. I only have room to do one project at a time, so not knowing which one to work on will not be an issue. Finding the right "Running" 2wd 71-72 SWB might be a little harder.
