Re: Cheap short bed

Use your front wall, tailgate and cut down your floor. Buy new short bed sides. Done

I don't know what's in your area but I would certainly try to find one close enough that I could pick it up. Freight would probably be a killer....

I've done it more than a few times. 1st and 2nd truck were mine. White truck was a 3/4 ton shortened and converted to 1/2 ton. Last 3 trucks were short bed conversions done for customers.

Re: Cheap short bed

From what I've seen, new reproduction will run about $2500-3200 shipped.

Re: Cheap short bed

Find somewhere you can pick them up in person. There's vendors all over the place. Even a half day drive and back could be worth saving $2-300 in shipping and you can inspect them at pick up, and if damaged ask for a different one, then no shipping damage when you get home

What is your floor now? Assuming steel? They're not hard at all. I've done two now.

Just keep checking it's flat as you go (see metal ruler)

The bedsides are a lot harder. I completely understand wanting to go with new side panels. If you can cut down your floor, reuse your tailgate and header panel, you can save a lot of money on that new bed cost (most of that price is the floor).

I'd say that's the opposite of a "cheap short bed". Should be able to buy bed sides for $1100-1300 for the pair.

My mistake, I interpreted the question as who sells a cheap short bed, I'm just going to buy a new (complete) reproduction.

SoCo, those cut down beds you did look really good.

No mistake, that is exactly what was asked. Cheap is relative and when it comes to these trucks these days there ain't no cheap, IMO. Starting with clean straight metal about ready for paint goes a long way toward saving labor money. And if the parts can be picked up, even cheaper. I wonder what a shop would charge to dismantle a bed, shorten the floor and body work to be ready for primer compared to the cost of a new floor. I figure that's why SoCo uses new bedsides. To me a new floor is best if you plan to use the bed with no worries of messing up the body "repair" across the floor in two places. If you do all your own work and don't figure your time, certainly cutting down a bed for the cost of supplies/no parts would be the cheapest.

It sure is

Unfortunately, it got put on hold to finish the house (done) and build the new shop (happening soon). It needs all the seams fully welded. I think I finished the floor. It's covered with boxes now
