Is my balancer fully on?
Hi guys,
It sounds kind of like I'm bottomed out, but I'm not 100% certain. Does this balancer look like it's on there all the way? Chevy 230. I was thinking maybe it is still off by 1/16" - 1/8". I've been using a sheet of 3/4" plywood on the face, and smacking the hell out of it with a hammer. I've also been whacking on it with a heavy rubber mallet. I tried putting ice on the crank nub to cool it down, and poured boiling water on the balancer to heat it up, that helped me get it to where it is now.

Looking back at my pic when I rebuilt my 250, it appears to be at the same location as yours. Sorry it's not closer but if you look at the taper on the end of the balancer, it looks to be like yours.

i know guys get away with it but you do know wacking them on can DESTROY the thrust flange on a crank shaft

Do you have alternate installation instructions? I'm trying to follow my GMC maintenance manual, which says to drive it on until it bottoms out against the gear. There are no threads on this style of crankshaft. Heat+Cold and a hammer is the only way I'm aware of.

Threads would sure make it a hell of a lot easier.. I was a bit worried that railing on it would cause damage but I'm not sure what else to do. I'll probably try a little more heat/cold tomorrow to see if it moves at all or if I can tell for certain that it is bottomed out.

^^^ Check this. Would really suck to find out out it is on too far when you go to put on belts.
If you have a can of that 'canned air' hold the can upside down and spray the divot on the crank to quickly cool it. |

Yeah, check if your pulleys line up. If so... you're golden! If not... Ditch the boiling water. You need a torch to put enough heat into the balancer. Just be sure you don't over heat it! But, if yor belt lines up properly, no need to mess with it any further. -klb

The balancer sticks out about 1/8th inch farther than the fan pulley. BUT it is my understanding that the water pump pulley mount is press fit on to the shaft and, compared to my old pump, is pushed farther back. I think I can use a puller to pull it forward if necessary. I'll mount the alternator today to check for alignment and see how things look.

Yeah, I didn't want to beat on it so I drilled and tapped the crank and used a standard SBC installer to press it on. Didn't take long to do this, as the crank is cast and easy to drill and tap.

Hard to tell from the picture you have posted but it looks like the outer ring on the damper is pushed back further than it should be. They are normally closer to being flush with the front.
