I ended up with a buddy's project a while back. I can not decide if I want to finish it out the way it is or go back to the original plans I had for it. Originally I was just supposed to get the 72 GMC C10 lwb truck. Well, I ended up coming back with the 72 GMC cab and front clip and it is setting on a 2003 Suburban 4x4 chassis. The cab and front clip look decent on there and the cab is all bolted down. It has a 5.3/4L60E, and all the wiring/modules are there.

Part of me says it will make for a good driving truck. The other part of me wants to put the body back on the original chassis. Cut the frame down and source a short bed because I've never had a short bed one of these. Or, put the cab and front clip on a Longhorn frame and build a plow/dump truck. I have a bad hankering for one of them too.

What would you do with it?

Hmmmm decisions decisions..

I'd say go the shortbed route because it would be the least amount of work and cheaper than buying a shortbed truck. Also using the 2003 frame may be a pain to get the bed to sit low enough on the frame or the cab high enough to line up with the bed without it looking odd. If you want another longhorn based truck, I'd start with a longhorn. Then you will have a shorty and another longhorn!

If you find an extra shortbed, I need one for my 72 k10 swb truck that is in pieces!

I don't know how far it is from being a driving truck but I would say get it running and driving the way it sits and see how you like it. You can always make a bed fit with a little cutting, welding, and grinding. Do you have a Longhorn frame, and/or have you measured it to see what bed would be close to fitting it the way it sits?

I agree with Leon on getting it driving first no matter what. I bet you already plan that. Will a long bed just plunk down on it with current wheelbase anyway? I think the shortbed is the thing to do... a Stepside! You will have a unique craft that drives ever so sweet

Yes, his build sure did. Honestly, I've been wanting to build a K30 dually for a while. But I'm deep into projects. Haha Short beds are scarce down here. I'll more than likely cut down a long bed to get one.

I could probably hook grounds and power wires up, put a battery in it and get it running. The MC, shift cable, and HVAC may take a while to finish. A long bed will almost set on there perfect from what I have measured. I do have another Longhorn frame and bed. So all I am missing is a cab and front clip. Haha

Tim, I did plan on that but I have considered trying to trade it for a K20 too. In my mind pulling the body off and putting on a correct frame is more my style. I think a long bed will go on there but I would have to modify the floor and build mounts etc. The bed that I have from the truck is nice on the outside but horrible on the inside. I'd just have to decide what I actually want to do with it.

That would be me. I'm not into the whole modernizing thing with these trucks. Special interest in these trucks, including mine, came about as appreciating them as a "modern classic". I love the trucks that came before but went with these for their ability to be used daily and run with the late models. I like the modern trucks, too. If I want all the changes that they possess, I'll just get one of those and drive the wheels off of it while I enjoy my classics for what they are.

I for one won't be buying a new truck for a while. As in after some kids are out of college probably.

I probably still won't want one then. They are nice but they sure charge for them. I can have a pretty sweet 67-72 for that kind of coin. Hopefully in the next 2 years I can start on my 72 crew cab. That will hopefully be the last truck I need.

Me too but it will be a while unfortunately. I need to start recollecting my crew cab parts collection. I sold it all a while back working a deal on a scotbuilt 4 door and then that truck got sold out from under me. Oh well.

This K1500ish is still around but has made some progress. I traded this truck to my brother about a year ago and he got it running and drive able to take it into Des Moines Good guys this year. He has a long way to go but it is better than having no project truck.

I would put it on its original frame
Not spend time to get it running on the 03 4x4 frame

Keep motor trade or sell the 03 chassis towards a 4l80e 2 wheel drive tranny

Possibly shorten the frame i liked how i watched Stacy David do that on gears
