A potentially expensive mishap.....

Well...'we' had a bit of a mishap due to all the snowy weather we've had.

We...and when I see we I mean my wife (lol)...was backing out of the driveway in my truck and broke the drivers side mirror.
She is a pretty great wife and a good driver but the amount of snow we had on the driveway got her off course as she was backing up and she clipped a tree branch.....sigh. She felt really bad about this and has offered to fully pay for it...but no need to do so from my part, we'll figure it out.

So the good news?...it wasn't the '72 which is in storage. It was my 2005 Silverado Duramax...although I'm still not sure if that's good news.

The bad news is that it has probably the most expensive mirror option on it which were the telescoping, tow, power, heated, signal mirror option.

So long story short I called GM parts to see what the replacement cost was.....$946.50 + tax (not including installation)....for a single drivers side mirror.....WTH?
(note:...those funds are in Canadian...so that is, what...about $60 USD? )

.....so if anyone has a good equivalent mirror laying around let me know...otherwise my morning will be spent largely calling the local auto/truck wreckers, lol.

...yeah its interesting once you have to wade into the pool of new cars parts and servicing and the costs associated with it to get a serious dose of reality.

Then it kind of makes you laugh about the issue on having to spend $400 on a tach dash or a speed minder or $500 getting a rear differential set up and thinking that is expensive, lol.

....even makes a set of factory tow hooks look cheap

If I remember correctly the fully loaded extension mirror is about 200 thru lkq and national auto. If you get the CAPA part it should be a lifetime warranty also

One thing about it is that it is the low profile 'accordion' style housing vs. the bigger 2 arm swing style, which I've seen a lot of.
So it has a flexible bellows between the main frame mount and the mirror head.

I called a wrecker this morning...and the guy just laughed and wished me luck, lol.

Maybe I'll have to put a simpler non telescoping power mirror on it for the time being and keep an eye out for the telescoping one?...

I had those same mirrors on my 2005 3500, totally clapped out, replaced them with the tall trailer extending mirrors, non power, alot cheaper than replacing 1 mirror,just a thoughr

I also found a set of 2 (although I only need one) for $245 on Ebay...not bad, if I could sell the other for $150 or something to make back a bit of the cost.

That said, my wife called our auto insurer on this and they said we could get it done under insurance for a $300 deductible, which is a good deal.
However, I would want to make sure it didn't have any impact on my insurance record in upping my rates, etc.

I removed the broken mirror unit this morning...that is one complicated internal mechanism. Looks like something you find in aircraft landing gear....lol
noting that I was considering just re-engineering it and having the parts made locally at one of the shops I use...but that is now pretty unlikely given the complexity of the broken connection.

.....there's going to be more to this saga, lol.

Went through the same thing except for the wife part, I was behind the wheel backing my trailer into a tight location picking up a truck and while paying closer attention to the trailer and the property owners nice brick walled drive way, I ended up swinging my RH/pass side mirror into the guys mailbox breaking the mirror and housing. I then made the same dealership call and got the same $900.-something replacement cost for the single RH mirror, I then tried the local newer vehicle salvage yards getting used replacement prices in the $3-400. range per mirror. While checking on new aftermarket replacement options, I ended up buying an oe used set off a local truck accessories place that happened to be customizing a 2005 3500HD D-max dually, catch was that I had to buy the pair so I ended up with a good used LH/RH set for $400. (well under half the cost of a new single). I installed the RH mirror and shelved the LH, figuring I would be prepared in case of any future mishaps with the drivers side. I would sell this LH single for $200. plus shipping cost, do you have a lower 48 shipping address? Mirror does have the turn signal option, the stick on added convex/blind spot mirror is partially covering it. Fedex ground shipment would probably be the cheapest option. Let me know, Mel

Part prices are always high on newer cars and trucks.They don't start to come down until the truck is about 6 years old. The wrecking yards will usually price parts about 50% to 60% what the new parts cost and mirrors are always expensive because they are easily broken and a big seller. Parts and service is how the dealerships make their money. Most mirrors are not that hard to install. You just gotta find all the hidden fasteners and be careful with those dang wiring plugs.

Try gmpartsdirect.com it’s about 40% off retail and gm factory parts. Also it’s the same as employee discount for most. I have also tried aftermarket mirrors and mine shake a little at highway speeds. I wish I would have paid more and gotten gm mirrors

As another data point, the GM originals are actually quite robust. I also have an 05 Duramax with the same mirrors. A couple of years ago I was towing with them extended a little bit and met an oncoming county utility truck. He came over in my lane just enough to clip mirrors as he passed. Mine folded back and I had no damage except for my heart rate. His broke the housing even though it folded as well (it was an F450.)

The more I see this kind of thing, the more I just want to rent a truck to take home the stuff my truck won't haul. Then again, I have attorneys on call, so maybe I don't have that much to worry about. Bad situation for you, in any event.

I had a damaged mirror on my Freightliner . Called the dealership and a replacement was $1,700.00 USD. Checked around the wrecking yards and found one for $150.00 USD.

I bought one of those mirrors from lqk last year. It was 260. I had to install a new slide motor in it. That was 60.

The slide motors are common. They make noise but won’t slide the mirror out. There are plastic gears inside that strip.
