My new 71 GMC 4x4
Well first the story. My wife was out of town visiting a cousin. They were driving around seeing others and visiting. She spotted this beauty and had him turn around. She knew I needed another truck especially a 3/4 ton 4x4. Anyway I dont know much about it. She got up at 5:30 am and took these pictures before heading home. Now just to get her home.
Now I know I am lucky to have found her.(the wife )

GMC used a lot of 305 V6 engines back then, they did some weird stuff compared to Chevrolet.

Ok, first of all that is one of the coolest GMC 4x4's on the board.
But are you sure it's a 71? It has a 68 nose on it and I think the V6's were discontinued before 71. Also the lock out hub the plastic "spicer" dial or are they a brass looking unit? What about the t-case shift lever location? Does the t-case knob show shift pattern or is there a sticker on the roof denoting this? These will all help identify what year your chassis is. Also, what does the tcase look like? If it's a pre-70 drivetrain, it'll be a rockwell, not the NP205. The VIN should start with "K" for 4x4 and "M" for V6 if it matches the drivetrain. 2 V6's were offered. The standard is the 305, the other was a 351. If it's the 351, it should be noted on the glove box. I need more pics! Oh BTW, a lift with ##'s is too cliche'. Dare to be different and leave it a stock height

help me out Jeff
First off thanks for all the comments. My wife will be very happy to know she did good.
And Jeff (Mr Saw) I hopped you would ask and help me out. I know very little about GMC's especially 4x4's but I am going to learn. I have not seen the truck. it is 6 or 7 hours away at her uncles house. I was just told the year. It looks like the entire front clip was changed but I bet the engine is original so yes it may very well be a different year. The hubs are the older brass looking ones I have a good pic of these but they are at home. I dont have a working scanner at home so I will bring them to work. She left the digi cam home on her trip. I also have a picture showing the inside shift location. These may help me identify it. or I could just load the trailer and get it. it is killing me not having it home. not really I have my 68 chevy in pieces and need to get some of it together. So in a nut shell it sounds like it may be an older one? I dont figure this is rare by any means but any idea how many may have been built? I am now afraid my wife is getting hooked of course that is not a bad thing I will get more pictures. I am also sure it is much worse than the pictures show. Thanks DAve

I think 69 was the last year for the V6 and the older style locking hubs. If the vin on the cab is original (star shaped rivets) and does not start with KM, then I'd say the cab and bed were swapped. It could very will be titled as 71 based on the cab VIN. I don't know about your locale but here the VIN on the cab is all that counts.
Also, drums or disks? 71 was first year for disk D44 FE's. Erl has a nice original 68 GMC 3/4 ton 4x4, he may be able to help.
