Re: Shaving Bumper Bolts?
Clean the bumper really good where you weld it.
I did mine about 30 years ago. Take the bumper and have it installed so you get the right angle on the bolts into the brackets and tac them off then pull it off and weld it.

Re: Shaving Bumper Bolts?
I’m a little confused by your last sentence Andy. With bumper installed and lined up, tack weld the bolt heads to the bumper so the bolts will stay aligned. Remove the bumper and weld the bolts to the bumper from the backside. Grind the bolt heads off on the pretty side, weld the gaps shut, grind some more and finish with bodywork.

Re: Shaving Bumper Bolts?
after you tack the bolts in place i always like to put a decent size washer on the backside of the bumper around the square end of the carriage bolt. and weld both together then weld the washer to the bumper. It gives a slight reinforcement and more welding surface. then cut the heads off and weld em up. Hope this helps

Re: Shaving Bumper Bolts?
One more thing; do not over tighten the nut or you WILL dimple the nice side were the weld is.

Re: Shaving Bumper Bolts?
They do now. They didn't back 28 years ago when I built mine.
