timing chain
Hey guys, the motor in my 69 c10 which I don't think is original but still a 350 has a hard time with timing. If I advance or retard it still doesn't run worth a crap. I have 3 carburetors I've tried to make sure it ain't that, so I pulled the plugs and turned the crank back and forth. If I start at 6degrees btdc it turns to 4degrees atdc. Seems like a lot of slack to me, what do you think, new timing chain or is this good

Re: timing chain
Are you saying you rotated the crank that much without ANY observed valvetrain movement? Since you're looking at the timing mark, will assume you still have the timing cover installed and are referencing rocker arm/pushrod movement with the valve covers off or something like that? Or perhaps just the distributor cap off and referencing the rotor tip? Just curious. If that is the case, then yes, time for a new timing chain. Recommend a Cloyes true roller. Not expensive, good quality.

Re: timing chain
Yes just turned the crank with the dist. cap off and watching rotor. I’m going to check the distributor gear also, but can’t imagine it being that worn out. Thanks for the help

Re: timing chain
Fix it sooner than later….some real serious damage can be done.

Re: timing chain
Definitely going to fix it before I drive, just thinking I might change the cam at the same time.

Re: timing chain
I second the Cloyes double roller kit. In my opinion it's the best one available.

Re: timing chain
Got it taken apart and dang if it doesn't have a double roller timing chain. And its tight. It needed a new crank seal so did that. So either my distributor is trashed which I didn't think was that bad or the cams going flat. It was to dark to see, so I'm going to check to make sure the cam hasn't been installed incorrectly.

Re: timing chain
Drop a new HEI unit into it ....the old dissy is most likely really worn internally...replace the resistor wire in the loom to get 12v at HEI coil...
BTW...flat cam lobe would not give you sloppy timing variances... what oil are you running in this engine...? Does it have a zinc component in it?

Re: timing chain
It’s the backfireing that had me for a while then I checked the timing and saw it was in and out. Just getting the truck going after replacing rusted body parts, this will be my first oil change. Don’t have anything fancy so I think I’ll put rotella in it
