2 piece driveshaft

Does anyone know the length of the front shaft on a long bed stepside ? I had mine shortened years ago and now due a transmission change , the front shaft appears to be a couple of inches short . I’m hoping that a stock length shaft will fit and I won’t have to have one made .Thanks in advance !

Do you have the light duty driveshaft or the heavy duty driveshaft?

Re: 2 piece driveshaft

Found this thread and had a question. My '61 long stepper is in the shop getting its original GM(not saginaw) 3 speed rebuilt and they said the single driveshaft I have is too long at 66" +. So I never knew that there was a dual driveshaft system on it originally. So I called a driveshaft shop and they said there's nothing wrong with a long driveshaft as long as its balanced, etc. and that its quite common for folks to get rid of the dual system due to vibration issues. However, my tranny guy who been doing this for decades said the opposite. My truck does vibrate at 65mph and its probably due to the poor workmanship of the driveshaft in there now which he did say looks rough.

So do I just replace the long driveshaft or go back to the dual system with a heavy duty carrier bearing? I don't plan on doing a high horsepower big block any time soon just keeping the slightly modded 250 I have in there now. Both are very reputable shops just one is a little old school than the other.

Thoughts, experiences?

Re: 2 piece driveshaft

I agree with the driveshaft shop..nothing wrong with a 66in shaft...
No need to complicate it with a 2pc..

Re: 2 piece driveshaft

I would take your one piece driveshaft to the driveshaft shop and ask their opinion of it. It may just need rebalanced.
