1967 C10 Truck 7.4L Upgrade

Hello guys. I have a few questions for you.
I have a 1967 C10 short bed step side small rear window truck converted to 5 lugs that I've been driving and upgrading for more than 10 years. I started with a 6 cylinder, then to a 350 and now I think I finally got the right engine for now right, it's a 1998 7.4L (454) Chevy Vortec Engine with a 4L80E automatic transmission. I like carburetors on engines, I'm ok driving my wifys SUV for fuel injected rides. I'm not an expert but I can assemble parts.


So far I got to the following parts:
1x Weiand 8122WND - Weiand Street Warrior intake Manifolds
1x Weiand Street Warrior intake Manifold 8122WND
1x Weiand 9006 - Weiand Carburetor Sealing Plates
1x Edelbrock 650 CFM Carburetor
1x Summit Racing SUM-G1575HS - Summit RacingĀ® Stainless Steel Intake Manifold Bolt Kits
1x Summit Racing SUM-359-180 - Summit RacingĀ® Thermostats
1x Fel-Pro SFLMS90240 - Fel-Pro Intake Manifold Gaskets
1x Mr. Gasket 2661 - Mr. Gasket Chrome Plated O-Ring Water Necks
1x Fel-Pro SFL70194 - Fel-Pro Distributor Base Gaskets
1x 3 Row Radiator with 2 fans that fits my truck
1x Custom Shaft


Parts I need but I don't know how where to get them:
1- Something that turns my fans on-off when it gets to the right temperature for those engines.
2- Transmission controller that works with my column shifter. (Do I have to change transmission?)
3- I friend told I may need to change the original differential gears to be stronger and with a different gear ratio, I have no clue.

Any feedback will be much appreciated.

Sounds like a cool project. Any pics? As far as the rear gears go, i think the only thing I would worry about would be the ratio. Unless that power hooked completely, I doubt you could hurt it. They aren't the dreaded 10 bolt rears like in third gen Camaro's. Depending on condition, you may have it looked at just to put any questions to rest on longevity.

I'm pretty sure your going to need to cut the 67 frame to fit the big block in , High hump to fit the 4l80

The selling point for me would be the 4L80E and since you have to run electronic controls to run the trans seems the right thing to do is swap it all over, FI and all.

The Vortec 454 should respond pretty well to a cam swap. Should be fun. BTW, you WILL spend a boat-load of money. LOL

If you don't cut the floor out on a small hump truck you can fit a 4L80, behind the engine. You just have to mount everything as low as humanly possible. If you plan on using a engine and trans out of the same truck you should use the PCM out of that truck to, so you can control both pieces. Also with the correct linkage you can use the factory column shift. (check out my 71 LS Swap thread for trans linkage picture). Diff gears all depend on what your driving style is, if it was me I'd do the swap and see how it drives and make adjustments at that point with the diff.

Well, the engine and transmission are mounted. Indeed, I had to cut the frame 1/2" where the motor mounts are located as they're wider than my 350s mounts.

I kept the Computer and it's already reprogrammed. I couldn't find somebody to do the wiring, somebody told me to put power to the fuse box and connect all the wires to the engine and delete the other ones. I thought it was easier to convert it to carburetor rather than FI. I would like to use a carb.

Look up Trick Tuning and Performance, they may be able to help you with wiring. (possibly ship them the harness and they ship it back). If you don't feel like messing with the harness, then ATI or TCI both make good transmission controllers that will control just the 4L80.

I have a used hydraulic roller camshaft for that engine. They have a step machined in the front journal. I ran it in a 454 for a couple weeks before swapping to a bigger camshaft. Pm me if you are interested. I will make you a good deal on it. I believe it’s a Crower. I will find the paperwork if you are interested.

I finally got it all together... after 8 long months...
I got the standalone transmission controller, new distributor, new headers, new engine cover gaskets, spark plugs, 750 CFM Edelbrock, Carb filter and base..

I was reading a post about marrying a Tahoe and my 67 and I think I'll do that instead now..... so I won't have a use for this whole setup now, if any of you guys are interested.. PM
