my new engine is back in the gmc. got a carb problem.its hard 2 start, doesnt run very well on the top, and has almost no power. its starting to bug me. the timing is set at 8 degrees, and it seems as though the carb is the problem. any suggestions as to what the prolbem might be? people say its running lean, but is there anything else it might be?
thanx

Since your motor is not stock, play with the timing first. I would advance it a little at a time till it kicks back when you try to start it, then retard it till it just stops kicking back. Take it for a test drive, and do some full thottle pulls...up hills if possible. If it pings retard it till the pinging stops. Depending on the gas you are running I would not be surprised if you could run 12 degrees with no problem. As far as the quadrajet, they are VERY senitive to float settings, so raising the float a small amount may cure lean problems if that is what you have.

How long was the carb off the motor? And was the carb rebuilt while it was off the motor? If you take a used carb off a running motor and let it set any amount of time the seals and gaskets will dry up. When you put it back on you will have air leaks and has\ve a lean run condition...

Make sure the fuel pump is OK. I had to replace one this summer as the truck was bogging big time on the top end. It was a freshly rebuilt carb a few months earlier. I asked around and it was suggested that I check fuel pressure. It was fine at idle and through midrange but dropped severly above 2500 rpm. A new pump solved the problem.
