Who has added EFI to 396 BB
Looking for pointers to which EFI system is best. FiTech ? Holley ? Edelbrock ?
Wanting to install on 69 3/4 truck. Hoping for a little less Gas smell out the tailpipe and improved idle and fuel mileage possibly . Mostly though More consistent idle at warm up. Has a 396 that is bored .060 over. Or do I LS Swap it to an LS big block ?? How does an old school big block compare to a LS big block ? Last edited by 69 customcamper; 04-27-2019 at 04:34 PM. |

No Standard 396. I have an RV CAM and it's bored .060 over. Smell like alot of fuel out the tail. Curved the DIZZY and nice fresh Quadrajet . Idles rather rough at 750 RPM. Tired of Carbs. None of the quadrajets ever last long till they are gas soaked.

Re: Who has added EFI to 396 BB
.
I'm running MSD Atomic ( full kit, with return fuel system ) on top of a 1970 402 w/#063 heads. It was dreamy with stock bottom end and valve train. I upgraded to roller cam XR270HR and associated head work/hardware and the Atomic has compensated pretty much without much "tuning" required. Cold start is just like a modern motor. It fires first try, idles immediately to about 900 then starts slowly ramping down to target which in my case is set to 650. It takes about 3 to 5 seconds to hit the target idle. Warm start is usually the same as cold start, sometimes differing slightly depending on temps and how long between shutdown and restart. Hth, -klb

Re: Who has added EFI to 396 BB
I think pretty miserable but I've not tested it.
A buddy and I did nearly the same amount of driving one day to and from a show. He was running a 67 Chevelle 350/350/3.08 w/carb and I 402/700r/3.73. We topped off before and then again after all the miles. He used 6 gallons and mine was 8. Whatever that means LOL! -klb

Re: Who has added EFI to 396 BB
Since your engine is relatively stock, I would do a stock GM 454 TBI system. Should be available pretty cheap. Same computer and harness as a Small-block system, but different PROM and injectors in the throttle body. If you do that, you can buy parts at any parts store in the country. Should be able to find this in a pick-a-part yard. Need complete intake with sensors, computer, and wiring harness. Add an oxygen sensor bung and a fuel pump. These do not use VATS and are OBD1 so not a bunch of extra stuff to worry about. Could use a fuel tank from a TBI S10 Blazer with pump if you want the tank out of the cab or just add an external pump to the in-cab tank.
