To paint or not to paint. That is the question...
I purchased a very straight no rot hood for my 68. Only thing is it has lots of character. Really dont like the term patina. My only concern is if I paint it it wont match the overall truck. All I plan on doing is the wood in the bed. So my only options are to try and paint the hood really crappy. Dry no shine and hope it matches or just leave it be. The rust does match the color somewhat

Hey Mark...you could always do a light clear coat on the hood to preserve what you have..Love that truck.

Re: To paint or not to paint. That is the question...
I think I have seen some faux patina....or maybe made to look nicely aged Paint done very well on you tube. Does not match now correct, also you could post in the paint section for some expert advice....Might also search CLR....Nice score btw.

I can see why you’re asking for advice. That is a tough choice. I’d probably go for a clearcoat only on the new hood. Tells more of a story and has a lot more charm if you ask me.

Re: To paint or not to paint. That is the question...
LS it
I think in your situation with the plans you have I would not paint it. I would keep the old hood on the truck and just keep this replacement handy for this truck for when it does get painted/ I wouldn't clear it either. Might as well paint it if you do that. You can "suspend" it's condition by spraying with Permatex rust treatment or brushing linseed oil/mineral spirits

Re: To paint or not to paint. That is the question...
I’m a big fan of original weathered paint but if it doesn’t match the rest of the truck it loses it’s appeal. I would paint it with a semi-gloss in the original truck color. I think that will blend in well.

I also really like 68bowtie's suggestion, especially considering the way the rest of your truck looks, that might be a better approach. Could do a very small repair to the old hood rusted corner with the new hood (but that would be kinda a shame for the new hood.. ) and blend it in as a small patina paint touch up - but that would be a challenging paint blend and probably obvious afterward. |

If I were to cut up a hood I would buy an aftermarket . No sense using a nice original even though I got the original for a lot less the a repo.

Re: To paint or not to paint. That is the question...
Basically the same approach as in my original post spray the enamai dry to get it dull ,didn't think of using a flattening agent. Thanks for the idea

Ya I know the angst of having a show car. I have a few and I'm really tired of worrying about them everytime I drive them . I will and have driven them in the rain to a show where I'll be staying a few days . Like the Syracuse nationals but if rain is forecast for a local show not happening.

Re: To paint or not to paint. That is the question...
I have a similar issue with my white over medium Olive Green GMC. When I bought it the dog house was devoid of paint. It had sat outside for years behind the furniture store who bought it new. I see others in the same condition...

Re: To paint or not to paint. That is the question...
I would flat/satin black the outside with a rattle can and POR-15 the underside. It won't take the outside to age and look right. Too bad the truck isn't yellow then the black hood would be correct for an Idaho DOT truck from back in the day.
Or maybe someone has a gold hood to trade.

I love that new hood character, I suggest leave it exactly the way it is and drive it.

Re: To paint or not to paint. That is the question...
I used the boiled linseed oil on my 68. After reading on a bunch of hot rod forums and such, linseed seemed the better option. If you sand 'patina', you ruin it. If you can't sand it, clear coat will eventually come off and look even worse. So I tried the linseed approach. Coming up on a year and it still looks the same the day I did it.
