Chrome dash bezels?

So I have a couple of chrome with black inner dash bezels. One is a 68 seven hole with wiper and lights on the left and choke on the right. I know its repro because I purchased it not too long ago and its in a Counter Parts box.

I also have another seven hole chrome bezel. Lights on the left and wiper on the right. This one I have had for a very long time, but there is no box. When I dug it out it was wrapped in tissue paper and bubble wrap. I don't remember where it came from. When you get in to the details it looks better overall than the Counter Part item. Wondering if there is a chance its NOS ... any way to tell?

Re: Chrome dash bezels?

I think all the chrome ones are repro. OEM should have a part number on the back.

Re: Chrome dash bezels?

I remember not too long ago a member had a wood grain NOS chrome bezel he posted up.

Looking at mine you are correct, there should be a part number, but there isn't one. I guess its just a nice aftermarket bezel. There are letters JTB on the back and that's the only markings.

Another unicorn bites the dust haha!

What are you saying? All repros are chrome? I know the factory did chrome in 69-72. Maybe you meant all chrome 67/68 bezels are repro

Re: Chrome dash bezels?

You can tell the repops just by looking at the back. These bezels are dipped to apply the chrome. Not sure how GM did it exactly but not dipped. The incorrect 67-68 OE bezels also do not have raised edge around the gauge holes.

Re: Chrome dash bezels?

Just so people that may be curious can see. Counter Part 68 one and the other I had hiding in my stash.

And yes TBONE is correct. Chrome front and rear on both.

The graining is also a dead giveaway on the repros

Very true as well. They have it figured out I suppose. Last I heard talk of it, a OE bezel was into $500.00 to restore a chrome with black. Any NOS out there are $400.00 + and usually the non chrome style, which are much cheaper to restore.

In my 6 years restoring clusters, I have probably touched every bit of 500 clusters and have never seen a super nice OE chrome bezel. About a dozen of that 500 was what I would call nice driver quality.

I would love to find a dry basement full of NOS bezels and other gauge cluster parts

I was thinking the ones that are all chrome, including the face. They don't even look right in a truck to me.

Oh yeah, I get that and agree. That big chunk of pebble grain chrome staring at you screamed "I lack the skills to paint my new reproduction bezel properly"

I still have a couple OEM bezels with perfect plating. They are chrome throughout front and back. That's because they were re-plated. I got them from Cheyenne Superman 30 years ago when I saw he was offering re-plated interior chrome. This was way before reproduction and original chrome had faded on virtually all dashes. I never noticed till more recently that he engraved "Cheyenne Superman" on the back

Re: Chrome dash bezels?

Here are some of the ones I have saved because they were a little unique.

Top left is a 67 GMC only. This one was molded if fawn and the darker color is painted. Only one I have seen molded in any color other than black.

Bottom left is a 68 Chevy only with speed warning. It was originally painted argent with black.

Top right is a 68 0nly chrome with black and raised perimeter of gauge holes.

Bottom right is also 68 GMC only but has no perimeter raise around the gauge holes. These are all factory OE bezels.

I wanted to share some variations. My thought is the one in the top right is for a CST package??

Thank you,
Tom

Re: Chrome dash bezels?

Some different stuff there. I always wondered, but never asked, if it was CSTs (or some CSTs) got chrome on bezel in 67/68. I recall the '68 CST I had about 30 years ago had the chrome, but could be remembering wrong. I wish I paying more attention to these details back when most trucks had what they left the factory with. The truth is, it didn't matter

Re: Chrome dash bezels?

From what I've seen and learned, the chrome started in 68 and followed through. 1967 was silver.
