power steering conversion question?

I have my PS pump installed and the 2 groove pulley on my crank doesn't line up with the 2 groove pulley on my pump? Is there a known pulley to install on the pump to line up with my 2 groove crank pulley? Or do I need a 3 groove pulley on the crank?? The inner groove pulley on my pump looks like it would line up with a 3 groove crank pulley......but i would like to make the current 2 groove pulley work??? Any help would be appreciated

Re: power steering conversion question?

Does your setup look like this ?
Bruce did a nice write up on alignment
sounds like possible mix and match set

Re: power steering conversion question?

Thanks for the link

What I find odd is that the outer groove on the crank pulley and outer groove on fan pulley don't line up?It looks like the inner groove on my pump and outer groove on fan pulley line up....which don't line up with outer crank groove??

Re: power steering conversion question?

Here are two power steering original pumps I have one on my 69 swb 4x4 with factory air and my dads 72 4x4 with low mileage
in my experience with these trucks the power steering pulley only has one groove

LMC shows two different pulleys one for acc truck and one for non ac truck
the only diff i see is the non ac truck has a nut where the ac truck ps pulley does not

I see on brothers there selling a double pulley pump listed as 67-87 probably setup for the longer water pump on the 73 and up engine

I am getting ready to put a 350 back into my 69 water pump and crank pulleys look correct the ps pulley does not look like the original one

what year a truck did you salvage the pump from ?

Re: power steering conversion question?

Your pump also looks like it sitting high as well Fig 11 you see its almost level with the crank pulley
Does your Alternator mount about the PS pump like in Bruce's Pic ?

I borrowed Bruce's great picture as I do not have an engine in any of my 67-72 trucks right now

Re: power steering conversion question?

It's a Saginaw pump that came with the CPP kit I bought and suppose to be an original style pump.

Re: power steering conversion question?

Yes....just like image 11....that is same bracket I have. The one that came with the CPP kit wasn't anywhere near correct, even though their literature says it does

Does anyone run a 2 groove crank pulley without A/C and use the outer groove for PS?

Re: power steering conversion question?

Look at salvage yards craigslist or order a new pulley from lmc or look up one sale side of this site

you could also try moving it with a puller to realigning it up to see if that works

I had to purchase a bolt on add on that bolts to the face of the crank, it works quite well. I too had more issues with pulley alignment than anything else. My waterpump pulley had to be replaced to one that was about an inch smaller to allow for belt clearance, then my alternator pulley did not line up so i had to go with a two groove pulley on that. However the main crank add ons are out there just make sure your outside dimension is the same and measure to make sure your existing threaded holes line up before you purchase. I ended up with two and only one worked for me. Pulley alignment was more a pain that the installation of the actual conversion kit. Good luck

Re: power steering conversion question?

Thanks for all the reply's and help:}
I was able to get the belt to line up with some shimming...but now there is one more obstacle! My water pump pulley and crank pulley are so close together i can't get the PS belt on. Is the easiest route taking off the water pump pulley to get the belt on? I'm talking about 1/16 of and inch between the two.

Re: power steering conversion question?

I believe i found the problem? The WP pulley is the same size 7" across as my crank pulley. I believe the short water pump pulley should be 6.25" across? Is this correct??

Re: power steering conversion question?

My WP pulley was 7" and I replaced it with a 6.33" diameter, That allowed extra belt clearance. The flow might increase slightly but I have noted no difference. Additionally my main crank had a dual pulley but the rear grove did not align with anything, so i installed a bolt on third pulley that bolts to the face of the original crank

This is how close my wp pulley was to crank, pictures here

I can get some pics for you when i get home if you'd like

Re: power steering conversion question?

My 69 with Ac and Ps water pump pulley is under 6 inches and a triple pulley
it should work fine enough to give your belt space

Re: power steering conversion question?

OK...thanks, I'll order a new WP pulley smaller then the 7.1 inch one on there now. Now i'm wondering if the WP pulley was wrong...is the crank pulley correct? I measured across the crank pulley and it's 6.75 Inches...is that correct for a original 69 307 engine??
