Re: originally spring under or spring over?
What model are we talking about here.
47/55.1 3100 had the rear axle above the spring the 3/4 ton had the rear axle under the spring. 55 second series through 59 pickups all had the rear spring above the rear axle. All I beam axle trucks came with the springs on top of the front axle.

Re: originally spring under or spring over?
On the 51 GMC 6 lug is spring under the axle. 8 lug is spring over the axle.
GMC had both short 116 inch and long 125.5 inch wheelbase half tons where Chevy only had short wheelbase half tons. 1/2 ton springs are under the frame rails 3/4 ton springs are mounted on the sides of the frame rails.
