1954 Chev 3100 235 Valve Adjustment

Question about the 1954 Chev 235 Valve adjustment procedure.
The 1954 shop manual says heat up the engine, lubricate valve stems, adjust valves.

Other information I have found indicates heat up engine, Place #1 cylinder to TDC, then from front to back adjust valves 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9. Use your feeler gauges to set the clearance of 1, 5 and 9 to .018”. Set the clearance on 2, 3 and 7 to .006”.
Rotate until BB lines up with pointer again, then set 4, 8 and 12 to .018”. Set 6, 10 and 11 to .006”.

Which is the correct method?
I'm assuming my 235 has solid lifters (stock engine)
Engine #0805600 F54X
Block cast # 3701481 , 3702436,3835911
Head # 3835913

According to this site: http://www.1954advance-design.com/St...g-numbers.html

Your engine is a 1954 235 truck engine which indicates solid lifters.
Adj your intakes to 0.006"
Adj your exhausts from 0.016" to 0.018"

Heres 2 sites that give a good explanation on adjusting the valves. They say the same procedure but come at it in different directions.

Good luck

Now this old fart will mess with your mind. I learned to adjust them while the engine was running.
We used a tool like his to loosen the nut and make the adjustment while checking the clearance with the feeler gauge.
This one doesn't have the coil spring that dampens it a bit though.

I'm thinking adjusting the static with the prescribed method will do fine though.

I can remember adjusting with my dad with the engine running - we used a piece of cardboard to stop the oil from flipping all over the engine bay from the lifters
