S10 rear end id.
Can any of you gurus tell me what this is? Guy says s10 4x4. No truck avail to se spid. Counted rotations. 3.4. So probably 3.42. Is it an 8.5? Is there an external way to see if Gov lock? Prefer not. Intending rear differentisl and trans swap in 51 gmc with 283

Re: S10 rear end id.
Not 8.5, its a 7.5. Measure it, I believe 60" wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting for surface on 4x4
on passenger axle tube stamp with axle codes

Re: S10 rear end id.
It will indicate gear ratio and if it was a LSD, whether gov-lock or torsen is depending on year.
You can also take the cover off to verify all components are good before you go installing it in your project.

Re: S10 rear end id.
Those codes are only listed on the spid, not on the axle/housing.
Pull the cover. That way you can inspect it, see what you have, and you’ll want to change the fluid anyways. The 8.5 was used on 4.3 5 speed trucks/blazers, and all zr2 trucks(4” wider than reg 4wd, 8” wider than 2wd). The axle tubes are bigger at the center section and they neck down before the spring perches. |
