what the heck

I am 60 years old and have worked on cars my whole life, but I have never seen one of these. It is some kind of spark plug extension. I cannot think of a purpose other than to decrease performance and drive ability in every way. Does anyone know what and why it exists? I am removing them and installing the plugs directly.

I think that is an Anti Fouler , so it does not foul the plugs , may not be what its called but Im sure thats what it is .

Re: what the heck

They are antifoulers for motors that are using a lot of oil to keep the plugs from fouling if it’s an old motor you may be putting them back

Re: what the heck

Hmmm. Well the motor had just been overhauled by the previous owner. So, I guess he put back whatever was on it. I installed the plugs without them and it runs sooooo much better. It doesn't have enough miles on it to know if it's burning oil, but it doesn't have any blow by or smoke.
I have been trying to get it "drivable" but the idle was so poor and it was backfiring, etc. I rebuilt the Rochester B and timed it via vac gage (prior to checking the plugs) and it is running pretty good right now, just a few misses and sputters occasionally. I'll get those worked out soon.

Re: what the heck

when I got married my wife had a chevy Vega. I had to use 3 of them to keep the motor running long enough to drive it to the junk yard.

These are great when you have a subaru that sets a cat converter code P0420. Put one in t eh rear oxygen sensor and you are good to go.

A vega would have needed two on each spark plug.

Re: what the heck

Yep, a non-fouler. As for Vegas, I used to buy them for $100-$250 with overheated engines, and put in a rebuilt engine with steel sleeves. They ran much better after that.

Yeah, I had one of those, too. Even a little 283 makes 'em scream! I had to put the F41 (boxed) control arms on the rear; the regular ones would buckle on hard acceleration.

AND get better fuel economy.

I've had one V8 Vega, two V8 Pintos, and recently sold my V8 Firefly (Chevy Sprint).

Re: what the heck

That Firefly would be like that Hayabusa with the turbos up in the General Discussion area.

Re: what the heck

I just found one on the #6 Cylinder (292 I6) when I pulled my head. My engine has hardened seals, but I believe the rings are ok, so I won't reinstall when I put the head back on and see how it does.
