Looking into getting 5 stud hubs on the rear!

So currently my 69 c10 has 5studs on the front hubs and 6 on the back. For obvious reasons I’d like to match em all up so either all 5 or all 6. Now I’ve seen some rally style alloys on summit and they are 5-stud which make me lean towards 5 but please guys let me know what my options are. Am I best off getting a conversion kit for the rear drums to put discs in? What info do you need to give me good advice? I know that I have a 411 ratio rear axle option number 4ho4dr.

you are going to have to swap axles to a 1971 or higher rear end or swap out the whole differential. personally I would call Randy;s Ring and pinion and tell them your issues and let them help you out.

Sounds like some one has already upgraded or changed out the front spindles and brake rotors up front.

So maybe swap out the fronts to 6stud? Could be cheaper to do overall. I’d rather keep the original rear axle to be honest. I thought if I could just get a pair of shafts to bob in I’d be ok but a new axle is more than I’m wanting to do to it!

Re: Looking into getting 5 stud hubs on the rear!

Choosing whether to run 5 or 6 lug/stud usually comes down to wheel choice and what pattern they’re available in. Me personally I’ll be converting my 67 to 5 lug when I do brakes over the winter. As far as converting to rear disc, unless you are racing the truck there really isn’t a reason to other than looks.

I don’t know by the option code what rear axle housing you have, 12bolt or HO52. I know with the 12bolt Summit has 5 lug axles available for 67-70 and probably has 5 lug brake drums and the gaskets you’d need for easy shopping. No need for anything special and all stuff most can do themselves, unless you want to change the rear gear ratio which you didn’t mention.

Re: Looking into getting 5 stud hubs on the rear!

I do have discs on the front, and I’m guessing there’s a lot more 5 stud wheel options than 6 stud? I dunno about calling Randy’s as I’m in the uk lol. I’ll try a few American car places here though they generally don’t know much about these trucks! I think I’ll stick to drums in the back then to keep cost down as the truck is standard basically.

true , discs brakes were available for 71 and up years, so some already did the conversion keep it like it is. I am sure it will drive fine

if its disc in the front, you can get 6lug rotors from summit for the front and call it done, unless you want to run 5 lug for a certain rim choice.

Re: Looking into getting 5 stud hubs on the rear!

Are the fronts 5-on-5" truck wheels? I ask because some cheapie aftermarket disc brake conversion kits use passenger car rotors with 5-on-4.75" lug pattern.

When I converted my 69 C10's rears to 5-on-5", I simply had a race car machine shop re-drill the stock axle flanges and install new studs. They also turned down the diameter of the wheel locators a little (around .050"?) to allow 73-up wheels to be used. That was done in the mid-1990s, and haven't had any issues.

FYI, 71-72 axles are longer than 69 axles, so they won't work in your housing.
