posi ? limited slip ? other ?
Okay,
I am just learning about these trucks and this board, so this may sound like a silly question, but anyway... In checking the ratio of this rear end I was going to spin the drive shaft and count wheel rotations. I have no wheels on the rear end right now. I also then went to the wheels and rotated one of them and noticed that the other did not rotate... I then tried it again on the other side, doing the same, the opposite side did not rotate as I expected it to, in the opposite direction. What does this tell me? Anything good? Something bad? Thanks. |

Sounds like a normal non-posi one legger rear end to me. I think if it was a posi, both of the wheels would turn in the same direction when you turn one of them. I could be wrong though....Anyone else know for sure.

The two terms Posi and Limited slip, are the same.
I think it was the company Eaton that coined the phrase Posi. General Motors later built the same rearend and called it Limited slip. Posi / limited slip is where there are clutches in the rearend that loc up when one wheel slips, and engages both rear wheels. By what you described with your wheels spinning (or not spinning in your case) sounds like what you have is what most folks call an "open diferential". This is when only one wheel drives the rear. No matter what. Doesnt matter how slippery the condidions, only one wheel drives. There is also what some folks call a "Dertoit Locker" or just a "Locker". This is just like a Posi / limited slip, but instead of clutches, there is a mechanical ratchet mecanism. When you go around a corner with a "locker" rearend, you can hear the ratchet sound. Thse are mostly aftermarket, and used in "Off Road" trucks / conditions. Darren

Then in what situation/configuration, does the opposite wheel (say left) rotate in the opposite direction when the (say right) is turned?
Or am I just thinking of my old remote control car days and simply asking a REALL STUPID question concerning these trucks? It could happen! Thanks, Jeff |
