Want to buy a 700R4
Starting a project truck with a friend and would like a 700R4 in place of the turbo 350. Anyone ever done this and will the driveshaft be the same? Don't have alot of cash with Christmas coming but maybe some trades???
Thanks... |

Hey I've got a 700R4 in the backyard right now. Came out of an '87 Astro that had a blown motor. I'd rebuild it, but I am in AZ also... If you're interested, email me at kwhipps@cox.net

Make sure you find one from behind a v8 because v8 and v6 700r4's ARE different internally. My books showed me the difference although I don't remember off the top of my head. ANd I think that your th350 driveshaft should work.

I did it and would recommend doing it. Shorten the driveshaft approximately 3", a couple adjustments to the linkage, recalibrate the speedo and you are done. Huge difference on the highway, cruise at 70 at just 2000 rpm. Do it, you wont regret it.

i was wondering whats involved in calibrating the speedo also but for a diff reason.... ive heard from a friend thats 700r4s are junk if youre going to be doing performance driving or have a quick vehicle that youre gonna be driving slightly hard. TURBO 400's are better but arent overdrive

Any 700 you find will need a rebuild unless it's just been done. If you are going to have anything but a stock engine, you will want it rebuilt or you WILL break it. As posted above, get it from a V8 car or truck, but have a shop that knows how to beef up a 700 rebuild it, it's not just a standard rebuild. You will need to shorten your driveshaft. The 700 is longer than the 350. Now would be the time to go to a 1 piece driveshaft also. To recal you speed, you might need a new trans gear. It's the little plastic gear the goes in the trans where the speedo goes. You need to change them whenever you put on larger or smaller tires or change rear end ratios. 700's are made for cars that have low ratios, like 2.40 or lower. If you have a 3.73 ratio, you speedo will be way off. Your speedo will say you are going 70 when you are going about 55.
You will also have to move your trans crossmember back a little too I think. It's not going to be an easy swap, it takes work and some fabbing. I would go to the junkyard, get a core 700 and have it rebuilt. As long as it was from a V8 you will be good. I think the difference is the V8 700's had 4 planets and the V6 had 3. More planets means more torque can be applied. |

Look in the yellow pages for a speedometer shop, all you have to do is change the gear size of the sending unit on the transmission. Has to do with the number of teeth on the gear.

In regards to the durability, I have driven mine for almost 4 years, pulling lots of weight, never a problem. When I had mine rebuilt I had a shift kit installed.

I agree with most of jmanz69 post except for the "not easy install" , it was probably the easiest conversion I have ever done. The crossmember got move back, but only 2 holes had to be drilled to have all 4 bolts attach. As for the driveshaft, I had 3" or so removed from the front drive shaft. As for strength, I have done some pretty good burnouts, pulled a 72 LWB on a car trailer on the highway 70 / 75 mph, passing people uphill.
Like I said before, I would recommend everyone doing it, if your truck is a driver. JMO Darren |

Turns out he lives about 20 min from me and has tons of stuff, including 2 really nice Cheyenne trucks, one is a bigblock. Im headed over there today.! Im getting a super deal on a sway bar and alot of small hard to find stuff and I wont have to worry about shipping. Im taking alot of cash and an empty truck bed! Wish me luck!
