Im finally pullin the ol 250 out of my 74 driver and puttin in a rebuilt small block over christmas break (nice to be a shop teacher have access to a lift and all the goodies), and i wanna know what are the best headers (least install troubles) and exhaust kit you guys have had the best luck with. its a low po motor with a very quality rebuild, that im actually lookin to get better power and fuel milage than the 250 that i could never seem to get dialed in... im also planning on doin a dig pic journal to show the kids when i do this, so ill try to post and finally try to contribute a little more the board... i feel bad for all the knowlede gained from you guys and i never seem to give any back... thanks again!!!

Mike, welcome for another Minnesotan!
Just wondering, is the old 250 in good shape and do you want to get rid of it or sell it? Good luck with the swap, let us know if you need any help.

Oh, I have always used Hooker headers...never had any problems or troubles. I had them in my truck when it had the 350...loved them.

I have the Edelbrock TES. I am not sure if they are the best, but the install could not have been easier. They bolted right up to my converter.

I used Heddman Hedders here and installed them with no trouble at all either. I made sure to use Stage 8 bolts from Summit to lock them in. Some people don't have header leaks but I did with the aluminum heads and these bolts stopped the leaks fast.

Thanks guys, keep the replies comin... The header i just wantt o clear everything, and Im lookin for a straight bolt on kit for the exhaust (but arent we all!!!) and im debating on summit or jegs or PAW for the mail order thing...
Yeah the 250 is available, and it does run rather well, although i would put a new carb on it.. i ve run it (its out in the driveway) and put about 25,000 miles on it in the year and a hlaf since i have owned it, and get bout 14-16 mpg with a 3.73 gear and 30.5 tires on it... i had new valve guides and seats put in last winter (to eliminate the 6 cyl knock) and i get a straight 155 psi compression. The ONLY reason im putin a small block in is cuz i am getting it in exchange for helping the other auto teacher move the past two weekends, and i have a pwr steering and brakes out of a 77 silverado w/350... so i am very confident in the motor, and it has 95K on it (orig miles on truck)... pm me if you want any more details n stuff... Thanks for the input, and keep those opinions comin!!! --Mike Here's the truck...

If you wanna spend a couple more bucks on headers, my thorleys are excellent. The flange is nice and thick so you dont have to worry about warping and the Tri-Y design makes better power than conventional headers.
They are a couple bucks more though.

Nice lookin' truck there Mike!
I have Hooker headers on my small block '84 and also their dual-exhaust kit. They both fit great except for the "ever present" trans. crossmember problem we all seem to share. The driver's side collector will end about 4" right in front of that crossmember so you have to go above it with a bend in your exhaust pipe. No big deal but it is a problem you might have to address. Also, the factory paint on those headers peeled real quick so you might want to strip them before you put them on and paint them with high-temp paint from Eastwood. Don't put them on without the Stage 8 locking bolts either. |

I just bought new Doug Thorley Tri Y headers for my 87 Chevy 4x4 TBI 350 truck and they're only $320 on a clearance special. They come in a factory chrome finish and a y-pipe to hook up to my single 3" exhaust. You should go to www.salleechevrolet.com and look for your headers there. Nice thing about them, is that I only live ten miles away from a great Chevy dealer that has a lot of aftermarket parts for Chevys.
Doug

I would get a set of Hooker Competition headers. They are good, and decently priced at about 165-180 depending where you get them from. Those are for the competition headers, not the supper competition. You really don't need the supper competition until you have 430+ hp. There not that much different from the regular competition headers other than pipe size and equal length.

I plan on putting Hooker Super Comps on mine when I get to that point. I've heard good things about the above mentioned brands too.
Hello from 10 miles up the road!!
