What is a good and durable overdrive transmission to use behind a bigblock chevy?

I am wanting to build a bigblock Chevy engine that will be about 600HP and the same amout if not more torque. What overdrive transmission will be able to handle that type of power?

None of them stock. 4L80E is where I would be spending my money most likely. The TH400 with the gear vendors is another option and they say the TH700 can be built to take that power, but I am not a fan of the gear split on the 700. I am going to put a built Extreme Automatics in my 69 short step with the 427. But I am more like 450hp not 600.

4L80 would the choice if you don't want a Gear Vendor behind a Turbo 400.

Automatic or manual? The Tremec TKO can be bought rated for 600 lb ft, but that's a manual.

4L80E for overdrive automatic. A great strong reliable transmission.

I would definitely want automatic and it sounds like 4L80E would be the trans to get. I dont know anything about gear vendors and I dont want to cut up my truck trying to make something fit.

There shouldn't be any cutting of the truck to install the gear vendors unit. Other than the driveshaft. They are pretty rugged pieces I know of several low 10/high 9 second cars that run them without issue. Some of the differences between the two come down to the 4L80 will require an aftermarket computer to operate which gives you laptop adjustment capability. The 4L80 will also have a lock up convertor, but with the engine your installing I would assume you will forgo that for a high stall convertor. A T400 with gear vendors will be cheaper to repair down the road. Gear Vendors has been around since the 70's or longer. Here is a link to more information.

Happy Shopping!
