Interior Mirror Keeps Falling Off
Ok I know this sounds strange and lame at the same time but I'm having an issue with the mirror on my windshield. Over the years I have installed maybe 100+ mirrors (old bodyman). I can't get this mirror to stay glued on to save my life. I've glued it three times and I paid to have it installed three times. We've cleaned, prepped and used a professional pre-cleaner on both the mirror slug and the windshield. Nothing works more than a few months. Any suggestions?
TIA

Re: Interior Mirror Keeps Falling Off
Having same problem on my 84, thought about getting a different type of mirror that screws in above the windshield.
Something like this maybe... Last edited by 57NAPCO; 06-25-2019 at 09:26 AM. |

Re: Interior Mirror Keeps Falling Off
My solution to the mirror issue. Off a Chevy Spectrum. Color even matched. 3 screws hold the base to the roof, mirror snaps into place. Found it many years ago at the Pull-a-Part. Haven't seen a Spectrum in a while.
This one is developing creeping crud on the back side of the glass, weird glue reaction maybe. I have a couple others as spares if the crud gets too bad. |

Re: Interior Mirror Keeps Falling Off
scuff up metal tab on the side to get glue .
mark outside of glass before removing old glue . get the newest date code glue kit you can find . some on the shelf for 5+ years and no good . glue JUST the tab on and not the top/bottom so your not screwed . 24hr later hang the mirror .

Cleaned and scuffed the little metal piece, applied some Gorilla 2 part epoxy and stuck it. Only been a couple of months but no issues so far. |

Re: Interior Mirror Keeps Falling Off
Mine kept falling off and taking chunks of glass with it. Eventually had windshield replaced at Safelite and converted to a 2000 Silverado auto dimming mirror at same time. No issues since. Go figure.

Thanks for all the help folks. Some great options now. I'll give it another try.

Re: Interior Mirror Keeps Falling Off
rubbing alcohol or something like that on both surfaces before gluing up has seemed to make the difference when I've mounted to glass. They fell off the few times I skipped that step. Never have fallen off when I used it. Possibly coincidence, who knows. I wish they'd just stayed with the roof mounting arrangement...

Re: Interior Mirror Keeps Falling Off
X2 on screw mirror to roof. I also had glass chunks removed when the mirror fell off. I have seen some nice retro style mirrors on the web. I do like the idea of an auto dimming mirror but don't really drive the truck often enough at night to justify it. That feature was nice on all of the new GM SUVs and pickups I have owned.

Re: Interior Mirror Keeps Falling Off
I took the stock windshield mount mirror and drilled a hole in the base, then used a large screw to secure it to the roof. I had two problems.
I have ceramic tint on my rear window and that orientation of the mirror seemed to reflect an image of the hood in the mirror. I guess the ceramic material in the rear window was somehow acting as a mirror itself and the rear view mirror was picking up that image. The day/night feature did not function properly. I think that might have more to do with the higher orientation of the mirror. Of course, the mirror was mounted much higher that the stock mirror, so no doubt that was the most significant performance factor. I plan to get a replacement tinted slider window and see if that improves the situation. The stock mirror mounted higher was fine in terms of seeing what was behind the truck, it just had the 2 issues noted above. |

Re: Interior Mirror Keeps Falling Off
Clean the glass work area very well glass cleaner let dry.
then wipe with rubbing alcohol (as said) clean all the glue off the metal mounting tab, take some 120 sand paper sand cross ways to how it will mount glass. Wipe down the metal tab with rubbing alcohol let dry. I wood make sure it's not above 50 humidity and not in direct sunlight hold it 3-5 min before taking pressure off. I leave the mirror till the next day. Now the big tip when you put the mirror on tighten snug it up just till the mirror does not giggle. BUT DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN the set screw!
