Pulling Motor, and Transmission

Getting ready to pull the motor and the automatic transmission on my '72 Jimmy.

Is it best to try to pull the motor and transmission together, or is it better to pull motor first, then the transmission.

I wasn't planning to remove the transfer case. Do I need to pull that too, or does the transmission release from the transfer case easily?

Thanks, Pat

Re: Pulling Motor, and Transmission

Just unbolt the transmission from the transfer case and it will slide right out. There will be less complications if you take the engine out first, then the transmission. Usually the complications stem from not having an engine hoist that will go high enough.
Also, if you decide to pull the engine and transmission as one unit, tape a thick plastic bag on the end of the transmission so that you don't spill all the fluid out because the unit will have to be tilted at a high angle for removal.

Re: Pulling Motor, and Transmission

I did as you said, and pulled the motor first.

Will pull the transmission tomorrow. I do have a receipt that the transmission was recently rebuilt, but I thought that having it this far, it would be crazy not to go through it.

Any idea why the numbers 505 are on the radiator support, and the same 505 number is on the AC unit?

The 505 is the build sequence. These marking were put on the factory floor. If you look closely, that number should also be at the top of the firewall.

Any more detail pics of the motor or firewall you can share? Documentation of survivors can be really helpful for future builds.

Yes. So it is faint but I believe it was black 22 on my firewall and a white 22 on my core support

Just found the 505 on the back of my power brake unit as well. Haven't found it on my firewall though.

Thanks for posting! Really well depicts the vac lines AC hoses and shows what is possibly the factory location for the zip tie affixing the AC muffler hoses with the hoses to the charcoal can. The brass cap nut on the muffler is OEM - too cool.
