Old VIN search

Hey everyone, long time reader, haven't posted much.

Anyway--have a '72 k10 swb cheyenne super, and one of the two previous owners, when he repainted it, apparently swapped the SPID to match the paint color--which he changed from an olive and white to a forest green/white combo.

Anyway, I have looked places to research the matching VIN's on the frame/door which are one digit off from the SPID VIN, but haven't had any luck.

Is there a good resource to do a VIN search? Every site online is giving me a "no record found".

Thanks!

Re: Old VIN search

Sorry to say I do not believe there is good place for trying to match a VIN to a SPID. Which digit is off on between the SPID and the VIN?

Re: Old VIN search

Recommend post pics of truck, metal VIN tag, and SPID.

Re: Old VIN search

Should have specified. It's more than one digit off, but the SPID says CCE, when VIN is CKE...the veh serno is off by a lot more than one digit. Guy who had the truck before me, bought it from the original owner. Motor was rebuilt professionally, but some basic wrench work the guy before me did was shotty...timing off, new 2 core radiator instead of 4 core, wrong year rear bumper swap. Anyway--matching VINs on original dealer tag(i have at home), door/plate and frame, but either the first dingus or the second dingus swapped the SPID, which infuriates me. Here are a few pics.

Here's interior and engine, prior to installing new master cylinder, new radiator and new radiator fan/shroud.

Re: Old VIN search

SPID is likely an original from a different (and 2WD) white/dark olive deluxe two tone Cheyenne Super. My paranoid inner self says a lower trim medium olive K10 has been repainted to match the C10 Cheyenne Super SPID in hopes nobody would catch the CC vs CK discrepancy - to pass it off as a Cheyenne Super. Glovebox door has been painted med olive over dark olive at some point, likely to make it less obviously stick out in the original medium olive K10 interior. Will look closer tonight. Could be something much less nefarious... Have a bright tailgate cover handle? Headliner? Have you checked for a build beer under the seat? Keep in mind seat may also have come from the glovebox door donor - along with the other interior trim.

At the very least, this is not a typo on SPID, it’s not a repop SPID, and it’s not a 4x4 truck VIN on the SPID - it is not this truck’s SPID. If it were a body swap, metal VIN would match SPID. If no build sheet to help solve the puzzle, there no way to know if this truck was born a Cheyenne Super other than conjecture. Sorry, am guessing this is not what you were expecting to hear.

Re: Old VIN search

Yeah--that's what I was worried about. Would be a helluva job, if indeed it was. Had a local guy who has about 30 of these trucks look it over pretty heavily and he had me freaked out at the beginning, then after further inspection, he was convinced is was a cheyenne super as well, just baffled at the SPID swap. Told me to see what I could do to research VIN--exhausted all possibilities on the google machine so figured I'd ask here...

Re: Old VIN search

You can see the glove box has been painted with the over spray on the spid ,So are you upset that you paid for a super or just that someone changed the glove box door ?

Re: Old VIN search

Not too sure your question. Still convinced it's a Super, but maybe the fella who inspected it for me, who has bought and sold over 50 67-72's, who had nothing to do with the seller, 5 years ago, was wrong?

It would just be nice to have a matching SPID is all.

Re: Old VIN search

Chrome tailgate handle cover and the headliner has been removed, but has original holes where it previously was....

Re: Old VIN search

Likely originally a medium olive K10 Cheyenne if remnants of headliner exist. Beyond that, no proof it’s a Super. If your inspector missed that the SPID was for a 2WD truck, I’d disregard pretty much everything he said... (2nd clue is that he also told you to research the VIN - which tells nothing about trim level).

Re: Old VIN search

He didn't miss the SPID discrepancy, he was the one who actually pointed it out, had me read off sticker/plaque/frame VIN's--which match. Gonna tear the thing apart to get to the bottom of it. He just told me to look into the VIN to see what info I could gather, if any.

What would "build a beer" be under the seat that I could look for?

Re: Old VIN search

Ha, fat thumbs and an iphone are a deadly combo... Sorry for the autocorrect typo... If the build sheet is still under the seat -and- the seat is from the donor Super, it would just match the SPID you have - no real help. If the build sheet is under the seat -and- it's the seat from the original K10, you could easily determine how the truck was born and get the original, correct SPID reproduced by member Jeff at outintheshop.
