Re: Lubricant for door hinges?
The owners manuals back in the day said to use engine oil.

Re: Lubricant for door hinges?
I had historically used WD-40 or Liquid Wrench but since switched to AMSOIL MP.

Re: Lubricant for door hinges?
I'm using WD40 spray lithium grease. It goes on a bit runny, but it dries to a thin, slightly opaque film.

Re: Lubricant for door hinges?
I recently found Tri-flow, it is a bicycle chain lube. This stuff is great penetrates well and works great on door hinges, hood hinges, window tracks and hood latches. This stuff is amazing and very low odor with just a couple applications loosens metal to metal contact up in seconds. I used this one some rusty Trans Am seat tracks that were not moving at all. Once I applied this they were gliding along with no binding. I also used this on my trucks drivers hinge since the little star thing was not moving freely and I suspect is what broke the door hinge. A little dab and little star thing was moving and no more squeak.

I use what ever is in my blue oil can, which is usually 30w non-detergent oil.

Fluid Film. Works great and it's solvent free.

Re: Lubricant for door hinges?
After this thread popped up, I decided to try to lubricate one of my doors that used to pop and be really difficult to close once it was fully open.
I used WD40 - I am not a huge fan of it normally, but so far on my truck, it has recovered my sticky hood hinges and kept them healthy for 6 months now, and the door that popped that I was sure I was going to rebuild the hinge on? Works perfectly. I am sure some of the heavier stuff works better, and I may apply a heavier wax containing lubricant (like bike chain lubricant for wet environments) but for now, WD40 saved the day. |

Re: Lubricant for door hinges?
+1 here. I lubricated my hinges this weekend with this. Sprayed them into the pins and bushings and moved the door back and forth to work them in. They are incredibly smooth now.

Re: Lubricant for door hinges?
ATF has been the best long term. A few applications at first and then forgetaboutit for a long time.
