i need help with a grill swap
i have pics this time. i have a 79 1/2 ton 4x4 chevy. i want to put in a 74 gmc grill. the gmc grill is to thick to fit in. another board member will give me the parts i need off a 73 he has to make it work i just need to know what i need. i know i need the center one. i took my center one out and stuffed the grill in and it hits on the side brackets, so i think i need some of those also. i dont want to hack the grill up if i dont have to.

I don't think those "side" brackets come off...in fact, the 73/74 grill bolts to them. I am guessing the core supports are different then and in order to put in that grill you will need to convert to an older one (core support).

Grill Swap
I think I have the answer to your question. I checked my GM parts manual, and the grille brackets for 73 & 74 GMC trucks are different than those for your 79 Chevy. In fact, they are unique for GMC trucks for those two years. If you can get the brackets off the 73 that the other board member has, it should fit.
PS – What condition is you 79 grille in and what are you going to do with it. Doug |

im throwing the 79 grill away..its cracked, cut, broken, and held together with zipties..i know the grill is a 73-74 only grill. with side brackets and the center one you think it will fit?

Grille Swap
I checked the parts manuals again, and the core supports are the same from 73 to 80. So as long as you have the side supports AND the center support, you should be good to go. I would suggest going to a GM dealer and getting the oval shaped nuts that hold the grille in. The GM part number is 06271829, group 2.729

You will need everything that bolts to the core support off the 73 for it to work. Outside and center supports AND the hood latch. As was stated before, the core support was unchanged from 73-80. The other parts however were specific for 73 and 74 ONLY.

The pull for the latch is located in the certer of the grille for 73 and 74 only, so you need the latch release.
