How can I mount this stereo so that the faceplate looks normal and securely holds the unit in place???
When I bought the truck this metal plate was screwed into the dash panel.

Hey, I had one of those once, If I remeber right there was a spot on the back to put a bracket that went from the back to the firewall, I didn't use it, I just used the standard plastic faceplate with the nuts, but it doens't look like you have those.
You could try a local stereo shop and see if they would have an old faceplate and nuts that they could part with for little or nothing.

I have the faceplate for the front of the stereo. What I DON'T have is a way to mount it from behind. What held it in place was that black metal plate shown in the first photo and the knobs stuck out about an inch. It looked very stupid.

Go to Home depot and get a strip of slotted strapping material. It is right by the flat bar stock. Cut it to length and bend it so that one end fastens to the center speaker mount bold, and the other end fastens to the post on the back of the radio. When that's done just put the face plate on the radio and your done.

Thats how i did mine. Now i have an in dash cd player but i still used the strap on the back, i just had to cut out the front some.

I would try the strap and a couple of washers on each side. One behind dash and one in front then the nuts. Should hold it pretty tight

Judging by your reply I am guessing that the plastic Kenwood face plate is not strong enough to support the weight of the radio from the front. You could cut that huge metal plate down so that it would fit behind the plastic face plate - maybe that would give you the look and the metal may be strong enough to support all of the weight from the front. You will need to put a nut and large washer on each post behind the dash, and then you can put the metal "downsized" faceplate on the front side of the dash with 2 nuts, that should hold it in place, then you could put the plastic one over the metal one to make it look nice. Obviously you will need 6 nuts to do it, but it should look a lot better.

go get some washers and grind em dwon and a couple of extra nuts it will work done it hundreds of times

Get some strapping material. The is provisions in the back of the radio to attach the bracket to the back of the radio
