is it worth it?

I had a headliner installed in my truck with a heat shield backing. The upholsterer used sticky back velcro to keep it up. over the fairly hot weekend the sticky back became less sticky than it needs to be. We are going to try a stronger adhesive but I am skeptical of whether it will work. My question is. Is it worth it to drill holes in the roof/ceiling in order to keep it up. I am fine with how it looks without it but would really like to have the heat shield.

I used the heavy duty Velcro (2" wide, 30 ft roll that costs like $30 at Lowes) and it got hot/melted and now the headliner sags. I have no heat shield so that may be too much weight for the sticky part of the Velcro if it gets hot. I am going to go back and put the most stout adhesive I can find and a ton of it up there.

I use a lot of Velcro at work and most of it doesn't hold up well to heat.
There is a 3M product that has VHB tape as a backing and it seems to work the better than the normal sticky back.
On some applications we also use Velcoins that you can rivet or screw on.

We don't sell it but I can get a part # or I can send you a small piece to try.

What if you put the Velcro up with panel bond it won’t come off and you don’t have to drill holes I would put some in the center to help support the weight

I should do a heat test to see if it is any hotter inside the cab with the heat shield than without.

?? Just a thought I would think so you’re not putting fenders together I don’t think it would come off very easy make sure it’s what you want to do

I'm not sure how much tension is being put on the panel to keep it in place, but perhaps fastening some strong magnets to the back of your panel would do the trick. I use magnets frequently for non-invasive display installations. Rare earth type magnets are the stuff. You'd be surprised how much they can hold!

That's a good idea. I have played with them before and they are vary strong.

I made a headliner too http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=741002 this one worked great with the velcro and is still holding strong. Then later I tried it again on my other truck and it sagged because and the plastic sheathing on my insullboard began to peel loose from the foam at the points of attachment. I ultimately removed that one. The magnet idea seems like a darn good one and may even inspire me to give it another shot. Thanks for that.

It's 3M, SJ3518FR & SJ3519FR. The magnets are a good idea too. We can't use them on aircraft so I didn't think of that.

I have not used these exact magnets before, but the idea would be to pop rivet similar magnets to the back of a thin stiff panel which would serve as the foundation for your upholstery, then simply stick it in place.

Just be aware that a magnet stuck to the roof skin will attract all kinds of metal particles to the paint side of the roof...

Because it is 2 layers of mettal and the large amount of bondo on the roof I don’t think this will be an issue but it is a funny visual. I was worried that it might pull a baseball hat off of my head because of the mettle button on the top.

I think we will try some stronger adhesive before I go with magnets. I would really like to use something that won’t pull off the paint if I want to get it off.

I have some 3m vhb 'booger tape' that was used to hold placards in wheel wells of aircraft.. it's tough stuff, but I can't give you the number until I get home from vacation.. seems I posted about it here before in an emblem thread, might still be there..
