How to install power steering pulley?

I have the correct pump, pulley and the woodruff key. The shaft on these pumps do not have threads on the inside, so how exactly do you press the pulley onto the shaft and how far? As far as the nut, still have to order that, how do you hold the shaft still to install it? I am trying to find the info in the shop manuals but must be looking in the wrong section. I am used to the style that is threaded and the tool helps press it on.

Re: How to install power steering pulley?

Workin, I read through that one earlier today. It didn’t really help. The ones I have seen all talk about the tool that clamps to the hub and pulls them off with a second tool in the same kit that threads into the center of the shaft to in effect pull/press the pulley back onto the pump. That doesn’t work for the pumps that have the solid shaft with external threads. I’ll get a pic to post up.

One other question, I’m not exactly sure what the nut is supposed to look like for theses trucks. Anyone have a correct pic or a link to one they KNOW is correct? I’ve googled it and searched but all I get is per listings and no real world answers with actual use pics.

Re: How to install power steering pulley?

This is the correct pump. As you can see, it has no internal threads on the shaft and utilizes a woodruff key. Those OEM, OTC etc sets will not install it, unless...is there a version of those that captures the external threads on the pump shaft to pull the pulley onto the shaft? Does it just then bottom out in the shaft? How do you the. Install and tighten the nut? Man I wish I could find this in the manual!!!

Re: How to install power steering pulley?

Simply install the key on the shaft and slide pulley on and tighten nut while holding pulley the shaft won't spin if your holding onto the pulley with the key installed , when you install the pump check belt alignment and tighten if needed. .

this is the nut , Any parts store carries them

Re: How to install power steering pulley?

And Grumpy with the win once again...I think you have answered almost all of my questions when I post. Pretty soon I’m going to have to start paying! I had started to slide the pulley on but it had a thin layer of paint on the inside and I wasn’t getting any of the threads to show. I sanded it off and was able to slide it down enough to expose some threads. Now I just have to order up the nut and my power steering hoses as well as the steering box. One more step closer!
