Talking the 383 is outa the 78 finally

After almost 2yrs of sitting and being built back up, I pulled the 383 from my 78 c10. Its getting ARP rod bolts, forged pistons [not sure on compression yet] and probably a new solid lifter cam, along with a 100hp nitrous system. Should be good for about 550hp w/ NOS when Im done I figured it was time to get cracking since Im selling the 79 and getting a ford:p

I never planned to keep the 79, just get it reliable for daily driving

The ford is one of the vehicles on my "must own at one point in my life" list, a 87-93 5.0 mustang

Tom, you & I know something possibly they don't. 5.0 stangs make excellent daily commuters..... especially old hwy pursuit 5spd notchbacks. Even w/130K on mine I was able to squeeze 19mpg in the city (keeping my foot out of it.... which is harder than it sounds).

I would love to have an older 5 speed notchback. It is too bad that Chevy doesn't have something comparable. In my opinion, the Camaro is too big to be considered comparable, and good luck finding an affordable Chevy 5 speed that can hold up to any horsepower.

I have considered looking for an old V8 Monza to try to do the lightweight V8 car thing.

A CIVIC?!?!?! Im hurt jim The only hondas I deal with have at least 6 cylinders I was going to get an accord, but our new tranny isen't ready yet and im not paying $4500 for a new stock tranny when mine dies. As SCOTI pointed out, the 5.0 is dam reliable and efficiant [compared to my trucks at least ] And no guys it isen't going to be a notchback. Its going to be a GT, with a ram air hood and cobra rear end. This is going to be a looker, not a real quick mover. Engine will be left mostly stock [except for the edelbrock heads coming ]

after i swap a stock motor back in my truck, if i still decide to sell it i'll be gettin a fox too. but it will be a notch or very nice lx hatch. the GT's don't do much for me. they look "ricerish" with the ground effects and spoilers on them imo.

scoti - where did you find a 5spd hwy patrol car. to my knowledge they were all AOD's. was it converted?

It was an original Austin (Travis County) high speed pursuit car (black & white w/the lights on the rear pkg tray/slick roof). Factory 5spd, 3.08's, + a gazillion holes in console, & the cool 160mph certified calibrated speedo. I bought it locally in DFW (Richardson) from a guy that bought/sold stangs & cop cars. I loved that car. Didn't take much to really wake it up either. I put on a cold/ram-air kit, underdrive pulleys, 2.5 mandrel exhaust w/'cat delete' option . Changed it over to 5-lug, slapped some good old AR grey center TorqThrusts w/custom offsets & a 3" altitude adjustment. I sold it because I had just paid all my CC's off after struggling financially from a divorce & I didn't want to get back into debt when I purchased my new 18 & 20" TT2's for my 67. Cash baby..... all the way from here on out......

I'll prob get another if I find one clean enough.

You realize that the 5 speeds in the Fords were the same as what was in the Chevies right. The abuse is what kills them. I worked at a Ford dealership for a year and I couldn't count on 1 hand the number of mustangs that came in on a day with 3rd gear problems = Tranny going OUT.

We finally stopped warranteeing them if they were abused.

Yeah a T5 is a T5, they all suck. They are pretty common though so it shouldn't be too hard to find someone or someplace to walk me threw a rebuild.

lol my buddies 87 GT lost 3rd and 5th and kept lockin up and you could move the shifter at all. Have to mess with it alot to get it moving. Reverse would always grind a little unless you slammed it really quick. I always did like driving it. Never was very hard at all to get the tires spinin. It had 2.73s with the T5 1st gear lower than the 700r4s. It did have t-tops so that was pretty cool. Nothing like driving around in a swimming pool and it happend alot more than once.

A mechanic friend told me that last night when we were talking about transmissions. I was surprised to hear that. I guess they hold upa little better in a lighter car like a Mustang than they would in a Camaro or something heavier, but they'll still die if you have any real fun with them.

He said the later Mustangs went to another 5 speed because the earlier ones didn't hold up.
