timken bearings in napa's pre-installed rotor race?
I bought a new front brake rotor for my 71 C10.. (part number 4885537). I pulled it out of the box to put in the races for my new Timken bearings, but saw that the rotor comes with races pre-installed.
My question is, would the timken bearings be fine dropped in with those races, or do I need to hammer those out and put in the races that came with my bearings? Last edited by turpentyne; 07-27-2019 at 07:06 PM. |

I would not.
Keeping a long story short. The bearing and race in the box are a matching set. There from the same company (same production Run). The race in the hub could be SKF , NSK or ?. Just my Opinion. And you know what that's worth. .

I don't know of a good way to determine if the tapers are the same. I've always replaced the cups if the part didn't come with the cone. It's a little more work, but unless you are rock solid certain that the parts match, it's a gamble.
Like Getter-Done says, pop the cups in there out and put in the known matching ones.

Third opinion: same as the previous two. I would say you'd be OK 95% of the time with the match. It's the other 5% that I'd worry about, and why worry when you have the solution in hand?

Re: timken bearings in napa's pre-installed rotor race?
Yeah... I figured better safe than sorry. Hammered 'em out and put in the timkens.
Managed to not gouge anything with the drift, so all's well that ends well! EDIT: for anyone interested, the races that were in there don't have a brand labeled on them. but part numbers are stamped: M12610 and LM48510. Got the rotor at NAPA. Not sure if that's some universal part number, but a google search comes up with Timken... what luck... hammered out brand new Timkens, so I could put in brand new timkens! Per @Getter-Done's comment, probably was still a good idea, having been from probably a different production run Last edited by turpentyne; 07-27-2019 at 09:01 PM. |

Rotors for my 98 crewcab came with races and studs.
Been a year so far. No issues yet

Re: timken bearings in napa's pre-installed rotor race?
I did this the first time recently, the races come out easy. As others suggest match up your bearings & races. Take your time and use a flat nose chisel of some sort to punch them out, you don't wanna ding up your rotor. I picked up a bearing/race/seal driver kit for cheap off Ebay or something like, they're worth the money. Grease and pound the new races in, easy once done.
