Rearend Question?
I just bought a 71 5lug rearend yesterday. How can I find out what gear are in it. The numbers on the rearend are NF3896838 on one side and GM61 on the otherside if that helps any.

pull the cover and look on the ring gear. it`s stamped into the gear. if i remember right, you want the last 4 numbers. mine is a 3.73 and the last 4 were 41-11. then just divide 41 by 11 (in my case) and that will tell you what ratio you have.

I agree with pulling the cover. No tellin when that oil was last drained and refilled.

If you can't find the number, count the teeth on the ring gear, then the pinion and divide the larger number by the smaller.

gabe..The numbers you have listed are not the numbers you want. The correct numbers are stamped in the right side axle tube close to the top. Sometimes they are hard to find and you might need a wire brush to clean the area. These numbers will identify what was put in by the factory but it is not always what is in the axle. People change stuff. The best bet is to open it up, get the ring and pinion number off of the ring gear and do a general inspection of everything. Post the numbers if you find them. Somebody here will be able to help.

you need the numbers off the ring gear. it`s the only accurate way to tell what gears are in there.
