I had read somewhere that 1968 Chevy C10 396 engines had the word "TRUCK" cast into the cylinder heads. Can anybody confirm this to be true and if so does anybody know of the casting number for those cylinder heads?

A lot of BBC heads had "TRUCK" cast into them. Not just the 396. The all had small valves and large or small oval ports. I believe there were no rectangle port BBC heads installed on trucks. But I've been know to be wrong before.

Talking to a friend that worked for GM parts for 40+ years was telling me that he believes the majority of the 396 short blocks were basically the same other than the cams and heads..This conversation came about when I cracked a head on my 396 and was trying to find a replacement. The casting number was coming up as an open chamber 427 truck head. Engine was still factory stock with about 160k on it. I gave up and opted to replace with a 454.

The what I assume is original 396 in my 69 has pass on it. They are 148 heads

Another cast-in ID is "High Perf". Or maybe just "Perf". It's been awhile since I've seen that.

Corvette and other higher horse power option Chevy Cars had " High Perf " cast into the heads, standard 396 had " Pass " cast in, and the medium duty trucks, C/40, 50, 60 had " Truck " cast in.
