5.3 rebuild question
haven't posted in a while, got my truck about done went to move it to tennessee and had it loaded up and made it about 200 miles and the oil pump took a dump and locked up the motor, fast forward a year i have my the motor out and tore down and at the machine shop.
so this is where im torn, i got to get the crank torn down .0010 (ten thousands hope i did that right lol) which is a 100 bucks, and i have to get connecting rods. looking at complete rotating assemblies aint too much different in price, I've been looking at stroker kits and cams, and its all kinda over whelming a bit.... i did see a video about stroker kits in the 5.3 having the piston skirt come down too low causing premature wear, is there any truth to this? my truck is a 84 k10 with 3/4 ton running gear, 4l60e, 208 tcase, 35's, and a 4 inch lift, my goal is i wanna do 400 plus hp/tq to the ground. i know the tranny won't last long

.0010 (ten thousands hope i did that right lol)
Nope .....sorry...haha... .0010 is one/thousandths.... .0100 is ten/thousandths With heads ,intake ,headers, and cam a 5.3 can hit 400 hp easily...no need for a stoker ...unless you just want to...I know a guy with a 4.8 with ls3 top end that's over 400hp And thank you for your service Sarge..!!!

Re: 5.3 rebuild question
What rods do you use since there is a .354" difference in stroke?

Re: 5.3 rebuild question
Do you need new pistons and have the bores touched?
If all you need is the crank ground .010 and rods, I'd look at the local Craigslist for good used rods. New bearings and gaskets and oil pump, you're good to go. For cam selection, look at "Texas Speed" website and/or give them a call. |

Re: 5.3 rebuild question
From what I've read, to maintain the same block deck height, GM used a shorter stroke crankshaft in the 4.8L and a longer connecting rod. I've never done it myself, but there's many guys who have supposedly put 4.8 pistons in 5.3's.
