Re: How to remove bellhousing bolts?!

Drop the clutch and pressure plate, and probably the flywheel, out the bottom, it looks like.

Re: How to remove bellhousing bolts?!

So, how do you install the clutch back? What I knew was bolting up the disc and clutch, torque them down while using alignment tool and then install the bell. I thought the removal is opposite.

Re: How to remove bellhousing bolts?!

Not on that bellhousing.
It’s like Steve said.
Slide the plate and disc out and unbolt the flywheel and take it out.
Then you can remove those two bolts from inside the bell and the rest of the bell bolts to separate the bell from the motor.
It’s easy like you have it.

Re: How to remove bellhousing bolts?!

What are we looking at? Is that a 250 or the earlier 235?

Re: How to remove bellhousing bolts?!

Looks more like an old 216. That bent rod/lever on top of the housing is for the foot operated starter. 6V starter, no solenoid.

There are four bolts behind the flywheel.

Re: How to remove bellhousing bolts?!

How similar were the 216 - 235 - 261 Series? Totally different or diameter-different bores on the same relative block?

Its a 235, all 6 cylinders with the foot pedal starter had that linkage regardless of 6 volt (prior to task force 55.2-59 trucks) or 12 volt (55.2 and newer). The key switch on 6 cylinder trucks was simply an on/off switch. V8 equipped task force (55.2-59) trucks used a normal key switch starter as we all have today. I have the same setup from my '56 3600 pickup, just haven't gotten to the point of pulling the trans off the bellhousing yet.

Re: How to remove bellhousing bolts?!

On my 51 GMC I was able to get those bolts off without pulling the clutch components. If memory serves me I used a box end wrench and a large pail of patience. I had to do them equally as they were too long to do without backing the bellhousing off.

Re: How to remove bellhousing bolts?!

Well, it has been taken apart! Thanks for the help.
I took the clutch and flywheel out. I don't how it would be possible remove the 2 upper bolts out without taking the disc out the two lower, maybe. This thing is heavy. I am glad that I am not putting it back together specially if it was in the truck.
By the way, they are for sale. PM me if you are interested.

Re: How to remove bellhousing bolts?!

On my GMC the two upper bolts come from through transmission and thread into the bellhousing and the lower ones through the bellhousing and thread into the transmission.

Re: How to remove bellhousing bolts?!

This bell has total of 6 bolts. 4 from inside bell to the block, the two lower one and then two middle/higher ones, and two very top ones from outside of the bell to the block.

The OP isn't asking about the transmission to bell housing bolts.. He's asking about the Bell housing to engine block bolts.. However, the information you provided is common to all GM manual transmission mounting bolt configurations.. I've had customers come into my shop wanting me to replace the 2 lower bolts, thinking the bolt heads had broke off..
